'The Sopranos' Is Getting A Big Screen Prequel

Film

The film will be set in the 1960s.

David Chase is heading back to New Jersey. The creator of the critically acclaimed HBO mob drama The Sopranos has co-written a big screen prequel to the series tentatively titled The Many Saints of Newark.

According to Deadline, the script is set in the 1960s around the time of the Newark race riot. While it’s unclear how closely the film will be tied to the events of the series, it will reportedly feature a number of characters from the groundbreaking HBO show. Given the timeline, likely candidates include Tony Sopranos’ father, Giovanni “Johnny Boy” Soprano, and uncle, Junior Soprano.

Chase co-wrote the screenplay with Lawrence Konner, who has previously written for The Sopranos as well as Boardwalk Empire.

“David is a masterful storyteller and we, along with our colleagues at HBO, are thrilled that he has decided to revisit, and enlarge, the Soprano universe in a feature film,” said Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich.
