Crowe costume fetches more than $150k

Costume pieces and props from the Russell Crowe film Gladiator have fetched tens of thousands of dollars at an eclectic auction in Sydney.

The Oscar winner, who turned 54 on Saturday, is parting with a mix of possessions, movie and sport memorabilia following his divorce from Danielle Spencer.

Some of the most hotly-contested film items include Gladiator costumes, including a stunt cuirass worn by Crowe when his character Maximus died.

An online bidder bought the armour for $125,000. It was expected to fetch between $20,000 and $30,000.

With the inclusion of buyer's premium - a type of commission - the buyer will part with $152,500.

A replica roman chariot was won for $65,000 and will cost the winning bidder $79,300 with premium.

Two life-sized prop horses used in the film were also up for grabs.

"Look at that, something for everyone," auctioneer Martin Gallon quipped as the horse lot was announced.

The props were bought for $5500 each, while a pair of black leather wrist cuffs was snatched for $32,000.

One bidder won a wooden training sword with a bid of $20,000 and an aluminium prop sword and spare blade went for $70,000.

The event, held in inner Sydney's Carriageworks building, attracted a colourful mix of clients that were as varied as the items up for grabs - some wearing ball gowns, others sporting beanies.

The actor will also part with numerous artworks, sporting memorabilia, musical instruments, 28 watches and 19 varieties of diamond jewellery.

A leather jockstrap worn by Crowe in the 2005 movie Cinderella Man was won by a telephone bidder for $7000.

Early in the auction, a leather pair of Dr Martens boots from the movie Romper Stomper (1992), was bought for $10,000.

Auction house Sotheby's Australia chief executive Gary Singer says the event, titled 'The Art of Divorce', has been a year in the making.

"It's cathartic having a bit of a clean-out," Mr Singer told AAP ahead of the auction.

"(Crowe) said, 'It's a watershed moment in my life. I need to deal with it in some way, to understand.'"
