MEGHAN Markle will trade her fashion forward style for a more demure, elegant look when she marries Prince Harry, experts say.
While the former Suits star, 36, is used to showing off on Hollywood red carpets, style commentators told News Corp Australia she will likely cover-up on her wedding day with a dress that features long sleeves, no bar shoulders, and no cleavage.
Vogue Australia editor Edwina McCann said Canadian designer Erdem and British-based label Ralph & Russo were her top predictions to design Ms Markle’s frock.
“I think Ralph & Russo are a good chance of doing, if not the actual gown, then perhaps what she wears afterwards at the party,” Ms McCann said.
“The designer, Tamara (Ralph), is an Australian, so that would be quite incredible.
“It would make quite a statement. She has worn Ralph & Russo before, when they did the engagement pictures.”
Erdem also fit with Ms Markle’s “pretty, romantic” aesthetic, Ms McCann said.
“His last collection that I saw in London was quite Victorian in feel, and I can imagine how that would be adapted for a bridal dress,” she said.
“I don’t think she would do Alexander McQueen, considering the Duchess of Cambridge wore that it would be probably too similar.”
Ms McCann said Ms Markle’s wedding dress would likely be “feminine” and “elegant” and “will be more covered than not”.
Despite speculation Ms Markle might opt for an American designer, experts are now at a consensus she has picked a Commonwealth designer.
British bridal designer Caroline Castigliano said Ms Markle could be expected to follow in the steps of other royal brides by keeping her look relatively conservative when she ties the knot on May 19.
While the wedding will not be held in the grandeur of Westminster Abbey, it will take place in St George’s Chapel, a sacred church of the royal family, in front of 600 guests including VIPs, royalty and the British aristocracy.
“I think it will be reasonably traditional because I think it’s very important for her at this stage to really become loved by the British people and show that she has a huge amount of respect for the Queen,” Ms Castigliano said of Ms Markle’s fashion choice.
She said Ms Markle would likely choose a long-sleeved dress, as per the tradition set by other royal brides including Kate Middleton and Princess Diana.
“I imagine she’ll wear a dress with a long sleeve, it will have a certain amount of lace on it, something really quite delicate,” Ms Castigliano said.
“I think it will be quite fitted the actual dress itself, it may have a sharp V-neck line and I believe she will have a big train on her dress that will probably be attached just past her waist and it will float out to the sides and round the back.”
Ms Castigliano said Ms Markle would not have chosen a bridal designer but would instead have opted for a fashion designer.
“I don’t think anyone who designs bridal will be making her dress. She’ll have gone with a fashion designer friend of the royal crowd, she might be in Stella McCartney, she might be in Victoria Beckham, they might make wedding dress designs for friends but they’re not what we call the bridal wear designers,” she said.
“She will choose (a) British (designer), even if she doesn’t particularly want to.”
Ms Castigliano Castigliano said she also had no doubt Ms Markle would be wearing a veil.
“I’ll go into shock if she doesn’t have a veil on. I’m sure she’ll have a veil on and it will have beautiful lace and bead work all around the edges that will frame the train of her dress,” she said.
She also predicted Ms Markle would change into a more risqué, low-cut dress for the private evening reception.
Couture bridal designer Stephanie Allin said her fellow designers were keeping “very mum” on who was designing the dress.
“Ralph and Ruffo who did her engagement dress- I think that’s a possibility, they are a very high-profile brand and they do show a lot of couture shows in Pairs,” Ms Allin said.
She said based on Ms Markle’s existing style and current trends, she thought it unlikely the bride would be wearing a pure white dress.
“She’ll go ivory or maybe even cream or champagne,” Ms Allin said.
She forecast that Ms Markle’s dress would have a simple design.
“I think she’s going to go for elegance and sleek rather than anything too princessy, she might go for volume, but it’s going to be done in a sleek way rather than a flounce way.’’
A divorcee, Ms Markle has wed once before, on a beach in Jamaica. The Church of England has ruled this is no impediment to her marrying Prince Harry in a church.
