Wollongong couple appear on Buying Blind renovation show

Illawarra newlyweds Jess and Fotis Lambis have “bypassed a lot of heartache” by getting a reality television show to buy them a house.

The Lambis’ were the first couple to appear on Nine’s new home renovation program Buying Blind – where three experts are entrusted with contestants’ own money to find, buy and renovate their dream home.

“We consider ourselves kind of blessed because we got a house that was renovated and we didn’t have to go through all that … stress and everything that comes with it ,” cafe manager Mr Lambis said.

The pair, who have only ever lived with their families, applied for the show around September last year out of sheer desperation.

“We’d been looking on the market for over two years and just being disappointed time after time,” school teacher Mrs Lambis said. “It’s a bit ludicrous for first home buyers so we got to the point where we were absolutely over it.”

During the process the couple were anxious and excited to find out the progress of their dream home but said they were given “nothing” – not a hint on its location nor decorating style nor land size.

Interior designer Shaynna Blaze (The Block) teamed up with buyers agent Rich Harvey and builder Marshal Keen and came in $130,000 under budget with a two-storey house in Kanahooka. A home the couple said is “close enough” to their dream home, and they love it.

“The suburb wasn't our first choice but they ended up putting us in Kanahooka right near Lake Illawarra … so we got a spectacular view, it’s breathtaking,” Mr Lambis said.

“Some days I’m waking up and I’m seeing a rainbow forming on the top of the lake,” added Mrs Lambis. “The location might not have been our first preference but they definitely made up for it in regards to the views and the overall positioning of the house.”

The duo say they are excited to have a future family in their new home though happy to enjoy the “honeymoon period”.

“We don’t do things like normal,” Mr Lambis said. “We got married overseas which isn't the norm for a typical Greek family – you have your big fat Greek wedding here and you invite your cousins sisters uncles neighbours dog.

“Now we bought a house through a TV show.”
