Bizarre Drew Barrymore in-flight magazine 'interview' goes viral

AN in-flight magazine interview with actress Drew Barrymore is circulating online thanks to a series of bizarre quotes attributed to the star.

Political analyst Adam Baron tweeted photos of the spread in EgyptAir’s in-flight magazine, Horus , during a recent flight, calling the feature “surreal.”

He’s not wrong: titled ‘Drew Barrymore: Motherhood is the most important thing in my life,’ the interview starts with a lengthy introduction by reporter Aida Tekla shaming Barrymore for her past relationship choices.

“It is known that Barrymore has had over 17 relationships, engagements and marriages; psychologists believe that her behaviour is only natural since she lacked the male role model in her life after her parents divorce when she was only nine years old,” Tekla writes.

“Ever since that time, she has been subconsciously seeking attention and care from a male figure; but unfortunately things do not always go as planned and she has not yet succeeded in any relationships for various reasons.”

OK, rude. A heavy dose of armchair psychology about Barrymore’s personal life — and not a mention of her professional accomplishments. The tone continued overleaf, in a bizarre Q&A-style interview with Barrymore herself.

In stilted, formal language, Barrymore discusses her parenting style: “I do not intentionally follow certain parenting methods with my daughters and I do not consult with psychologists,” she says. Instead, she focuses on “nurturing their minds as well as their small bodies.” She opens up about taking a break from her career for motherhood: “I could not resist performing the most important role in my life — being a mother — in which I hope to be conscientious.”

Weirder yet, a deeply judgey question from the reporter about Barrymore’s post-pregnancy weight loss.

“A few years ago, after your last delivery, you gained several kilograms that even your fans accused you of being overweight and neglecting your health,” the reporter says, before congratulating Barrymore for returning to a more “graceful body.”

Her response? Not a swift slap in the face, but grovelling thanks.

“I feel overwhelmed when someone tells me that I have regained my image and managed to lose that extra weight,” Barrymore is quoted as saying, before encouraging “every woman who is overweight to work on regaining her beauty and body.”

As Maron’s tweet gained traction, many on social media questioned whether Barrymore had been involved in the interview at all:

Sure enough, a spokesperson for Barrymore told the Huffington Post that the star “did not participate” in the interview, and that her team is “working with the airline PR team.”

Which is PR speak for “someone’s definitely getting fired over this.”
