KYLE Sandilands has spoken out about skipping an annual radio awards ceremony over the weekend, labelling the event a “piece of sh*t”.
Kyle was mocked mercilessly on stage by Chaser comedians Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards in Melbourne on Saturday night after pulling out at the last minute. His KIIS FM co-host, Jackie O, was also a no-show, despite the pair winning the coveted Best On Air Team award.
“Funny, we didn’t even show up and we got more press than anyone that was there,” the shock jock said on air this morning.
“Oh yeah. We weren’t there,” Jackie O said, prompting newsreader Brooklyn Ross to ask: “What happened to you two?”
“Couldn’t be a**ed,” Kyle replied. “It’s a piece of sh*t event — that’s why I never go. It’s one of the world’s most boring events. It’s the most boring, long, drawn-out, ‘Yes, I know I’m going to win …’”
Meanwhile, Jackie O set the record straight about her own absence, denying reports she’d also bailed at the eleventh hour.
“I wasn’t ever going,” she protested.
During the industry event on Saturday, the Chaser comedians compared Kyle’s failure to turn up to the number of sick days he takes from his radio show.
“Kyle Sandilands was supposed to be with us tonight … but he literally advised us around lunchtime that he wasn’t coming,” Taylor said. “So I guess Kyle treats the ACRAs a bit like he treats his own show — he never really feels all that obliged to show up.”
Hansen continued: “It’s been a very busy year for Kyle — not just on radio, but also on TV with his Channel 10 pilot Trial By Kyle … a show where the rhyme in the title was the most creatively ambitious thing in it.”
“So Kyle’s not here,” Taylor said. “Which is great news for the rest of us … and the even better news is that Alan Jones isn’t here!”
While Kyle and Jackie O may not have turned up, most of Australia’s other radio stars, including Mick Molloy, Jane Kennedy, Dave Hughes, Kate Langbroek, Amanda Keller, Carrie Bickmore, Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell, Marty Sheargold, Grant Denyer and Ed Kavalee were all at the ACRAs.
The ACRA for Best On Air Team is the top award at the event. Nova’s Kate, Tim and Marty won it in 2016 and 2017, but this year they were pipped at the post by the KIIS FM duo.
