Australia's best restaurants: delicious 100 list released today

The most important list for food-lovers across Australia is released today: the Delicious 100.

Fresher and edgier than any other restaurant review rating system, Del 100 dishes up the best hundred eateries in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and SA.

Will you agree with the experts’ picks? As always, the Del 100 sites let readers rank the restaurants themselves — and the results will be published on December 2 as the People’s Choice awards.

Here’s a peek at three of the best from each state:

NEW SOUTH WALES

It arrived in Sydney’s restaurant market with the auspicious tag of the seafood restaurant without a view of the sea. Two years on and Saint Peter has finally wriggled its way free of the sceptics and landed atop of the Delicious 100 list thanks to husband-and-wife team Josh and Julie Niland’s flawless take on fish.

Meanwhile David Chang’s Momofuku Seiobo at The Star has flourished enough under new(ish) head chef Paul Carmichael that it’s shot to the pointy end of the list at number two.

Finally Ester, the jewel in Chippendale’s culinary crown, is edging towards icon status with its placing as Delicious’ third-best food offering in NSW.

QUEENSLAND

Newcomer, Greek restaurant Hellenika at the Calile in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, knocked off some of Queensland’s biggest restaurants to be crowned No. 1 in the sunshine state.

The 150-seat restaurant overlooking the hotel pool combines top notch service, a drinks list of nearly 500 wines, with perfectly cooked Greek fare wrought from the very best of ingredients.

Burleigh Heads restaurant Rick Shores, with its incredible ocean views and pan-Asian dishes to match, landed the No. 2 spot.

Beachside North Queensland restaurant Nu Nu at Palm Cove, which offers cracking dishes heroing local ingredients, was third.

VICTORIA

Pt Leo Estate on the Mornington Peninsula might be just one year old, but it’s firmly made its mark on the Victorian dining scene, taking out the top spot in the state’s list.

Led by chef Phil Wood, the double act of the bustling Pt Leo restaurant and the 45-seat fine diner Laura won judges over with the celebration of peninsula produce served in stunning sculpture park surrounds.

Last year’s number one, Igni in Geelong, came in at Number 2, with chef Aaron Turner’s fire-licked fare as elegant as ever and delivering another quinella for regional Victoria this year.

Armadale’s Amaru — last year’s People’s Choice winner — rounded out the top three, and also took out the award for best vegetarian option.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

In SA they are doing it differently, joining the Delicious 100 for the first time.

Here are three of their standouts, starting with the Advertiser’s Best Restaurant the Salopian Inn.

A regional favourite for many years, The Salopian has gone to another level in recent times. Owner/chef Karena Armstrong now sources much of her produce from her own backyard patch and it shows in gorgeous dishes like steamed snapper with ginger, white soy, peas, broad beans and cabbage.

Best new restaurant in SA is d’Arenberg Cube — a dining experience that is out of this world, as husband-and-wife chefs Brendan Wessels and Lindsay Durr produce a succession of tricked-up morsels that will constantly delight.

Osteria Oggi has foundations built firmly on tradition but delivers with a lighthearted spirit and contemporary panache. Italian-accented wines, Italian-accented staff and a room that feels as if you’ve dropped in on a sunny piazza — nowhere else captures “la dolce vita” quite like it.
