'I'll never see my baby boy again': Liam Anderson's mum Lindy speaks at his funeral

In a heartbreaking funeral that included music from David Bowie and the Carpenters, hundreds turned up to say a final goodbye to Liam Anderson, weeks after he was allegedly bashed to death in a Sydney park.

More than 400 people attended the 26-year-old’s funeral yesterday, held in a North Ryde chapel.

Liam’s mother Lindy broke down at the funeral, later telling the Daily Telegraph her son’s funeral had made the painful reality of his death sink in.

“I’ll never hold my baby boy again, life will never be the same,” Ms Anderson said.

“It’s real now, until today I could pretend Liam’s death never happened but now it’s sinking in, I will never see my baby boy again.”

Liam was killed in a violent and bloodied attack in Queenscliff, on Sydney’s northern beaches just after 6am on Sunday, November 4.

Plumbing apprentice Mathew Flame, 20, was charged with murder in relation to Liam’s death.

According to police, Flame made full admissions to the attack and participated in forensic procedures, during that time. His face was still spattered with the victim’s blood when he was interviewed at Manly Police Station, court documents allege.

“The accused states that he knew what he was doing at the time of the attack, but had no control over his actions,” the documents read.

“He stated that killing the victim was the only way he could escape from the ‘reality’ he was suffering under.”

Court documents state the pair met up the previous evening with a group of friends at the Brookvale Hotel for drinks before attending an Awful Things hip hop concert at Surry Hills.

Mr Flame and Mr Anderson, an aspiring rapper, allegedly took MDMA and kept drinking until the early hours of Sunday.

About 3am the group travelled back to the northern beaches, where Mr Flame allegedly took more MDMA and smoked marijuana, the papers state, but the final dose of the party drug gave him heart palpitations.

At the intersection of Pavilion St and Bridge Rd in Queenscliff, a fight broke out between the long-time mates, where Mr Flame allegedly struck Mr Anderson in the body and head multiple times with his fists and bare feet.

Mr Flame was arrested and handcuffed as police arrived on the scene, and later pepper sprayed when he stood up to watch officers attempt to save the life of his best friend who died at the scene.

The court has ordered a mental health assessment on Mr Flame before his next court appearance on January 29.
