The Surprising Reasons Meghan Markle and Prince Charles Have Bonded

Since Meghan Markle made her arrival on the scene and entered the royal family, there have been in-depth examinations of her individual dynamic with basically every single member of the Firm. (It’s actually kind of shocking there hasn’t been an inquiry yet into her “fraught power struggle” or “surprising friendship”—it’s always one or the other!—with Lupo, Kate Middleton and Prince William’s dog.)

In her new piece on Prince Charles for the Daily Mail, royal author Angela Levin takes some time to explore the relationship between the Duchess of Sussex and her new father-in-law. The two have always seemed to get along quite well, at least based on their friendly body language at events, as well as the fact that Meghan asked Charles to fill in at the royal wedding when her own father, Thomas, was unable to attend. Meghan and Prince Harry also spent nearly a week with Charles earlier this summer.

Levin explains that Charles and Meghan are indeed getting along quite well. She notes that any theories about Charles potentially getting frustrated with the drama caused by both Thomas and Meghan’s half sister, Samantha, are not valid at all. If anything, Meghan’s family-related struggles have only made her and Charles grow closer, Levin says.

“Anyone who thinks the soap-opera antics of Meghan’s father, half sister, and half brother have affected Charles’s feelings for his new daughter-in-law couldn’t be more wrong,” Levin writes. “‘On the contrary,’ I was told by an immaculate source close to the prince. ‘There have been so many traumas and crises within the personal life of the royal family, from the Duke of Windsor onwards. And many royal divorces. That’s why the Duchess of Sussex’s troubled family background has endeared her to Charles even more.’”

That’s not all! They don’t just text each other TMZ links recounting Thomas’s latest antics! They both love art, too! Levin continues, “It’s not just dysfunctional families that unite Charles and Meghan. They have bonded over art, history, and culture. Meghan is particularly keen to learn about earlier royals and the artists who have painted them. The prince believes she is ‘incredibly smart’ and, having been trained by the Hollywood machine, is uniquely equipped to cope with the endlessly scrutinized life of a royal.”

As others have suspected as well, based on their chumminess at certain royal engagements, Levin posits that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Meghan are also hitting it off. “‘Camilla gets on very well with her too,’ continued the source. ‘Not least because both of them have joined the royal family from the outside. Camilla goes out of her way to find time to spend with Meghan, to get to know her and make her feel welcome. She’s the ideal mother-in-law.’”

This report, combined with yesterday’s news that Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mother, will likely be joining the family at the Queen’s residence in Sandringham over Christmas, indicates Meghan has—as much as tabloid covers might shout otherwise—very much been welcomed into the fold by the royal family.

For the couple’s first appearance of the trip, Meghan paired a white dress by Australian designer Karen Gee—it‘s called “Blessed”, which feels pretty pointed toward her recent pregnancy news—with a beige trench coat.
