US Midterm Elections: High profile players weight in on the vote

THE lead up to the 2018 US midterm elections has seen many of Hollywood’s power players air their grievances and flaunt their endorsements for what are sure to be one of the most important midterm elections in US history.

Over the past two years, Donald Trump’s presidency has unfolded like a reality TV show with no shortage of drama during which many celebrities weighed in with impassioned calls to fans to vote.

Veep actress Julia Louis-Drefus posted an emotional video to her Twitter account urging people to vote as one way of ending the “fear, racism and violence” spread by the Trump administration.

Jake Gyllenhaal posted on Facebook in support of Beto O’Rourke, the Texan candidate challenging Republican Ted Cruz for his Senate seat. “Vote for change, for compassion, for civility, for wisdom,” wrote the Brokeback Mountain star. “Vote because you think the government doesn’t effect you or there’s no such thing as a good politician. Vote because you can, because we fight for rights by exercising them”, wrote the 37-year-old actor who posted a photo of himself wearing a T-shirt supporting Beto.

Mariska Hargitay announced that she had voted on Twitter.

Nicole Richie voted but didn’t say for who.

Cher called this election a “matter of life or death”.

Seth Meyers proved that he had voted by posting a family portrait on Instagram.

Taylor Swift had received criticism for not taking sides in the current political climate and finally broke her silence with one Instagram post in which she declared support for Democrat candidate Phil Bredesen.

“Please don’t sit this [election] out” Swift posted on her Instagram account.
