It was a busy year for Hollywood hook-ups, divorces, weddings, babies and (please pass the Kleenex) … deaths.
In 2018 Jennifer Aniston visited Splitsville, Brangelina bickered, Justin Bieber found true love (maybe not) and Aretha Franklin departed. And, in the most terrifying development for any Australian sports fan, Ben Simmons began romancing a Kardashian.
SIMMONS’ FOUL
Australia’s basketball superstar-in-waiting Ben Simmons was on top of the world.
He led the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Playoffs and won the league’s Rookie of the Year Award … but then he was spotted around Los Angeles with a Kardashian — Kendall Jenner.
Relationships between elite athletes and Kardashians do not tend to end well. Philly fans were so upset when Jenner sat front row at a recent game and when the 76ers lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers a fan started a petition on Change.org attempting to ban Jenner from the team’s stadium.
SPLITSVILLE
Oh Jennifer Aniston. When will you find true love? (Pssst. Call me Jen.)
Jen and actor husband Justin Theroux divorced after two years of marriage. Aniston told Elle magazine about her two divorces (to Brad Pitt and Theroux): “When they came to an end, it was a choice that was made because we chose to be happy, and sometimes happiness didn’t exist within that arrangement anymore.”
Other celebrity breakups in 2018 included Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, Usher and Grace Miguel, Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson, Ariana Grande and Mac Miller, Noah Cyrus and Lil Xan, Iggy Azalea and Deandre Hopkins, Nicki Minaj and Nas, Amber Heard and Elon Musk.
Oh yeah. A Kardashian also visited Splitsville.
Kourtney Kardashian, 39, split with 25-year-old boyfriend Younes Bendjima.
BRANGELINA BATTLES
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were supposed to live happily ever after their Mr and Mrs Smith hook-up but in 2018 their divorce got messy.
Jolie accused Pitt of not paying enough child support for their six children, but Pitt’s lawyer countered the Fight Club star had loaned Jolie $US8 million ($A11.3 million) and paid $US1.3 million ($A1.8 million) in bills for Jolie and the children.
ROSEANNE BARRED
It was the hottest show on TV — Roseanne Barr’s sitcom reboot — but it was quickly cancelled after the comedian wrote a racially despicable tweet about former US president Barack Obama and his adviser Valerie Jarrett.
2018: YEAR OF THE WEDDING
Wedding bells rang loud in 2018.
Americans were chuffed when their gal and Hollywood starlet Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in May.
US TV networks went nuts and American TV hosts donned fascinators and pretended to like eating cucumber sandwiches during the blanket media coverage.
Gwyneth Paltrow consciously coupled with Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk and Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin secretly married, just two months after getting engaged.
Former Jonas Brothers bro Nick Jonas and Indian starlet Priyanka Chopra also fast-tracked their nuptials after a four-month engagement.
Other newlyweds … Canadian rocker Neil Young and actor Daryl Hannah, Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin and Syrian painter Jwan Yosef, Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer, model Emily Ratajkowski and Sebastian Bear-McClard, Hugh Grant and Anna Elisabet Eberstein, Game of Thrones duo Kit Harington and Rose Leslie.
BILL BEHIND BARS
The comedian once known as “America’s Dad”, Bill Cosby, was found guilty of aggravated indecent assault, dubbed a “sexually violent predator” by the judge and sentenced to three to 10 years in prison.
BABY BOOM
Yes, a Kardashian makes the list.
Actually, two Kardashians.
No. Sorry. Three Kardashians added to the world’s population in 2018.
Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West had their third child, via surrogate, daughter Chicago West.
Kylie Jenner and rapper boyfriend Travis Scott had daughter Stormi (no relation to Stormy Daniels).
Khloe Kardashian had daughter True with NBA star Tristan Thompson.
Rappers Cardi B and Offset had Kulture Kiari Cephus.
Aussie Handmaid’s Tale star Yvonne Strahovski had a baby boy with hubby Tim Loden, Kate Hudson and musician boyfriend Danny Fujikawa welcomed daughter Rani, Rachel Weisz and Daniel “James Bond” Craig welcomed a baby girl, Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy had a son, and singer Michelle Branch and Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney welcomed son Rhys James.
BIRTH OF THE YEAR AWARD
Model Slick Woods did not let labour pains stop her from walking the runway in lingerie at Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty show during New York Fashion week. After the show she gave birth to son Saphir.
IN MEMORIAM
Turn down the lights.
Roll the sad music.
The following celebs took their last bow in 2018 …
The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, Marvel Comics’ icon and king of the cameo Stan Lee, Hollywood star Burt Reynolds, celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, fashion designer Kate Spade, and Verne “Mini-Me” Troyer.
