Careers were ended, hearts were broken and a secret baby was revealed … yep, 2018 was another wild year filled with plenty of shocks in the world of entertainment.
There were many moments that left us clutching our pearls this year, but these are the ones that made us clutch the hardest.
ARIANA AND PETE’S WHIRLWIND ROMANCE
It was a blink and you’d miss it romance.
Ariana Grande started dating comedian Pete Davidson in May. They got engaged in June. And in October they split up. What a rollercoaster!
During their intense relationship, the two stars moved into a $16 million Manhattan apartment together, Grande got six tattoos in honour of Davidson and she even released a song about him.
MARK WAHLBERG/MICHELLE WILLIAMS PAY GAP
When Ridley Scott decided to drop Kevin Spacey from All The Money In The World and replace him with Christopher Plummer, he needed Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams to reshoot some of their scenes.
But things got extremely awkward in January when it was revealed that Wahlberg was paid more than $2 million to reshoot his scenes whereas Williams was paid less than $1500 for hers.
That’s not just a pay gap, that’s a pay grand canyon!
When the details were made public, Wahlberg saved face by donating his fee in Williams’ name to the Time’s Up Legal Defence Fund.
BACHELOR FIASCO
As news.com.au’s resident Bachelor expert James Weir wrote: “Nick Cummins (aka the Honey Badger) turned his back on love — and Australia — by dumping both finalists in the finale, choosing to go home alone after wasting everyone’s time.
“We’ve been saying it for weeks,” Weir wrote in his recap of the last episode. “Nick hates himself for signing up to this show and he doesn’t want to choose anyone. Not because the girls aren’t great — they’re fabulous. But he’s just not into anyone.
“That part is OK. But it’s the fact he had crapped on about how they’re the perfect girls for him that seems a bit unfair.
“Nick will be fine after all of this. He got $250,000 for the show, a bunch of lucrative endorsement deals and a book. But the girls have been left with nothing.
“Look, it’s all just a bit of a mess.”
UBERGATE
Have you ever sent a text to the person the text was about? It’s bloody mortifying, isn’t it?
Multiply that awkwardness by 10 and that’s probably what Karl Stefanovic and his brother Pete felt earlier in the year when details from their private phone conversation ended up in the media.
During the call they b**ched about their colleagues, with Karl saying his new co-host Georgie Gardner needed to “step up” if she “wanted to stay on the show”.
Pete complained at length that he “hated his job” and that it was “sucking the life out of him”.
The Stefanovics both issued apologies a day before the details from their phone call, which Pete put on speaker when he was in the back of an Uber, were made public.
“We talk a hundred times a day and hardly ever about work,” Karl said according to the Sunday Telegraph. “But we did, and the conversation was recorded. And we are sorry. I was angry with myself at first that I could be so stupid.”
Pete added: “I did a silly thing and feel awful for any embarrassment I’ve brought to my (Channel 9) colleagues, who I deeply respect.”
Months of bad press followed and at the end of the year Pete left Channel Nine and Karl was dropped from the Today show.
ROSEANNE’S CANCELLATION
Few stars had a more spectacular fall from grace in 2018 than Roseanne Barr.
The comedian’s sitcom had been rebooted and it was a ratings hit in the US, but then Roseanne managed to blow up her entire career with a single tweet. Given Twitter has a 280 character limit, that’s quite an achievement.
In May, the comedian made a racist “joke” about one of President Obama’s former advisers on Twitter. Hours later, her sitcom was axed by the TV network it aired on.
“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC president Channing Dungey said in a statement at the time.
Two months later, Roseanne released a bizarre interview claiming her show was axed because she is a Donald Trump supporter and said her joke about Jarret wasn’t racist because, “I thought the b**ch was white”.
KEVIN HART QUITS OSCARS GIG
Just hours after he was announced as the Oscars host for 2019, Kevin Hart’s homophobic comments and tweets from the past came back to haunt him.
The Academy asked him to apologise for the anti-gay remarks but the comedian refused and instead pulled the pin on the ceremony.
“I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscar’s,” Hart, 39, tweeted. “This is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologise to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.
“I’m sorry that I hurt people. I am evolving and want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together not tear us apart. Much love & appreciation to the Academy. I hope we can meet again.”
KYLIE JENNER’S SECRET PREGNANCY
Kylie Jenner caught everyone by surprise in February when she announced that not only was she pregnant but that she’d already given birth.
Jenner, now 21, gave birth to a little girl called Stormi and broke the shocking news on Instagram.
“My pregnancy was one I chose not to do in front of the world,” Jenner wrote in the announcement. “There was no gotcha moment, no big paid reveal I had planned.
“I knew my baby would feel every stress and every emotion so I chose to do it this way for my little life and our happiness.”
BILL COSBY FOUND GUILTY
He’s one of the most famous comedians of all time who was affectionately known as America’s dad, but Bill Cosby’s reputation will forever be in tatters after he was sentenced to three to 10 years in a state prison on three counts of indecent assault, after molesting Andrea Constand at his home in 2004.
Many more women have accused the 81-year-old TV star of sexual misconduct — but almost all the other allegations were outside the statute of limitations.
