New Year's Eve Brisbane: Guide to celebrating the end of 2018 - Brisbane Times

A brand new display will set the night alight from eight barges along the Brisbane River.

There will be two fireworks shows - one at 8.30pm for families and one at midnight for late-night revellers.

The seven tonnes of fireworks will blast for about 10 minutes and will include aquatic fireworks, dragon tails - a 360 spinning firework - and ghost shells - a firework that fades away and reappears.

Skylighter Fireworx director Max Brunner said the spectacular would stretch across seven kilometres from South Bank to Hamilton Northshore.

“If you are at any one of the precincts along the Brisbane River you are going to have a front-row seat to an amazing fireworks show,” Mr Brunner said.

“We want to give them [the audience] a new experience and a better experience so they go away saying ‘that was the best yet’.”

The show will also feature a special tribute to Aretha Franklin at midnight.

Where to watch for free

The most popular spot to watch the fireworks will undoubtedly be South Bank, although Eagle Street Pier and Hamilton Portside Wharf and Howard Smith Wharves are next in line.

Other places to watch the fireworks include Kangaroo Point, Mount Coot-tha, Dock Street at South Bank, the Mount Gravatt lookout and Highgate Hill Park.

Public transport

People are encouraged to catch public transport to watch the fireworks, with travel free from 8pm on Monday until 5.30am on Tuesday on buses, trains and ferries.

There will be additional services available on the night to get everyone to the fireworks and home again safely.

Council will also waive tolls on the Go Between Bridge from 8pm on Monday to 5am on Tuesday.

Weather

Delightful Christmas weather will continue for New Years Eve in Brisbane, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

The Bureau said there will be very little chance of rain, a few clouds about and temperatures of about 25 degrees around midnight.

Very different from last years festivities when afternoon storms squashed crowd numbers at South Bank's New Year's Eve fireworks.
