Truth of Meghan Markle ’ghosting’ dad Thomas Markle - NEWS.com.au

Despite moving countries and escaping to a castle turret where she can wear tiaras and experiment with transatlantic accents, Meghan Markle has not been able to shake her old life or those who inhabited it.

She’s trying hard to reinvent herself as a young royal — relatable, yet untouchable. But it’s getting harder. Her own staff are turning on her, leaking private details to the press.

This week it emerged that palace staff now refer to Meghan and Harry as “Monica and Chandler” from Friends because the Duchess is controlling and the Duke is a pushover with a yen for sweater vests. The comparison has probably propelled Meghan to considered revoking staff TV privleges but she knows doing so would be a very Monica thing to do.

Clearly it’s a tumultuous time, and it’s not made easier by the duchess’ estranged sister who keeps rolling around being all “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia” or her dad who insists on going out in public and making scenes. Dads love nothing more than making a scene.

It’s no wonder Meghan has distanced herself from him. Still, Thomas Markle isn’t backing down. No matter how many people tell him he should probably stop talking publicly, he’s convinced that he can fix everything if he goes on morning television to say just one more thing.

This week, he burst onto Good Morning Britain to inform everyone that Meghan has “ghosted” him. “Ghosting” was once a weak move reserved for jerks on Tinder and me to my boss, but it seems duchesses also enjoy the method of suddenly withdrawing from communication.

“I’m very disappointed by it. I’m not sure why it’s happening. I’m reaching out … every day I try and text her and just haven’t had any comment back,” Thomas told the morning show. “The ghosting I don’t completely understand …”

Meghan’s in a bind and we totally get it. Who doesn’t experience anxiety about replying to text messages? Sometimes the pressure of composing the perfect reply becomes too overwhelming and, all of a sudden, six months passes and you still haven’t answered that message from your good friend who texted you frantically, “I’m at the restaurant, it’s been an hour, where are you???”

Meghan could’ve lied and said she hasn’t received the texts because that dusty old palace she lives in has rubbish phone reception and no Wi-Fi. Or she could’ve summoned one of her servants to simply reply on her behalf with “new maid who dis?”.

But the truth is, as if Meghan still has her old phone number from when she was just a regular person. The moment she got engaged to Harry, the royals probably made her cancel her old contract and signed her up to their fancy group plan with unlimited data and a top secret number.

It’s safe to say some random is now the proud owner of Meghan’s old phone number and they’re very confused about all the beggy, typo-filled text messages Thomas is spamming them with.

But Thomas hasn’t considered this and instead he insists he’s being ghosted.

When you’re being ghosted, there are two things you can do: Accept you’ve been cut out and let the warm flash of humiliation wash over you. Or ignore the fact this person wants nothing to do with you by sending them huffy messages in the hope they’ll see your desperation as cute.

Thomas is nothing if not persistent. And he has taken it a step further by publicly demanding the Queen step in to stop Meghan from leaving him on “read”.

”I would appreciate anything she can do and I would think that she would want to resolve the family problems,” he said on Good Morning Britain.

The Queen’s a very busy lady who has a lot on her plate and mending Thomas’s rift with his daughter is far down on her to-do list.

Her number one priority? Trying to stop the palace’s Friends-obsessed staff from calling her Ross.
