GDay USA red carpet: Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth, John Travolta, Isla Fisher attend the annual GDay LA awards - NEWS.com.au

Miley Cyrus stole the show at this year’s G’Day USA Black Tie Gala in Los Angeles.

The singer, who is an honorary Aussie after tying the knot with Liam Hemsworth just before Christmas last year, couldn’t have looked more proud of her husband who will receive an award for Excellence in Film at tonight’s event.

Cyrus skipped the red carpet but snuck into the awards show after it started wearing a stunning top with a plunging neckline.

Speaking to news.com.au on the red carpet, the Hunger Games star revealed that he was initially the preferred Hemsworth to play Thor.

When asked if there’s a role he’s particularly annoyed he didn’t get, Hemsworth said, “Yeah, Thor!”

“I actually screen tested before Chris did,” he said about the character which has turned Chris Hemsworth into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

“We both auditioned for it. I was still living in Australia at the time. I sent a tape over for Thor and he’d (Chris) already auditioned with Kenneth Branagh who was the director of the film over in the states. He didn’t get a call back for a screen test.

“I got flown over from Australia to do it (screen test) and I had a conversation with Chris on the phone and he said, ‘You’re getting flown over to do a screen test?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah!’ He goes, ‘I didn’t get a call back.’

I said, ‘Well, you’re probably just not enough of a man.’ (Laughs)

“He ended up getting it anyway,” Hemsworth said.

Hemsworth was presented his award by Vince Vaughn, who told the audience that he considers the Aussie actor a great mate.

But Vaughn had the audience in stitches when he joked that perhaps he isn’t as close to Hemsworth as he thought “because I wasn’t invited to the wedding”.

“The Last Song - that’s where he met Miley who he might or might not be married to. I wouldn’t know personally because I was not invited to the wedding. I’m just a guy who gave up his Saturday night to be away from his kids to come down here and give Liam an award,” he joked.

Keeping the gag going, Vaughn spoke about Hemsworth’s role in The Hunger Games movies and said, “I bet people weren’t hungry at that wedding … I think those two could afford a real nice spread”.

Accepting his award, Hemsworth thanked Vaughn whom he called “My fu**ing hero”.

“It honestly means the world to me that you made the time to do that,” he said to Vaughn.

Hemsworth also thanked Cyrus, saying, “Thank you to my beautiful wife. You are a sweet, sweet angel. I love ya, you’re great”.

Some of Australia’s biggest stars hit the red carpet for the annual event that honours prominent Aussies who have made a significant contribution to the US/Australia relationship.

The high profile awards this year are going to Hemsworth for Excellence in Film, Game of Thrones production designer Deborah Riley for Outstanding Achievement in Film and Television, and legendary Aussie singer Helen Reddy who is receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Other big name stars in attendance include John Travolta, Five Seconds of Summer, Isla Fisher and Luke Hemsworth (because let’s face it, one Hemsworth is never enough).

The gala is being hosted by Patrick Brammall who is best known for starring in the Stan series, No Activity and Offspring.

Guests are being treated to a dinner showcasing Australian food and wine curated by Curtis Stone.

“I’ll cook beautiful Aussie lamb and use all Australian ingredients,” the celebrity chef, whose LA restaurant Maude will celebrate its fifth birthday next month, recently told the Herald Sun.

The G’Day USA Black Tie Gala is presented by Qantas is being held at 3Labs in Culver City.
