Friends star Matt LeBlanc has revealed he was so broke before landing the role of Joey Tribbiani that he did his own dental work — and almost “starved”.
The 51-year-old Top Gear host, who is now worth a staggering $110 million, said the role came just in time to save him from being unable to eat, The Sun reports.
He told US chat show Conan: “You know when you think, ‘I’ve got a little money in the bank, I can hold out until the next gig’? I had, I think I was down to $US11 ($AU15).
“Now that’s holding out too long. Because even if I said at that point, ‘I’m going to go get a waiter job,’ by the time that $11 ran out would’ve been before the first pay cheque on that job. I would’ve starved.”
LeBlanc added that when he went to get his first headshot to show to casting agents, the photographer suggested he filed down one of his teeth — but he couldn’t afford to visit the dentist.
He explained: “So I go to the drugstore and buy a three-pack of emery boards” and did the gruesome job himself.
The actor quipped that when he went back to the photographer: “He said, ‘They did a nice job!’”
LeBlanc has been making a string of revelations to chat show hosts lately.
Last month, the actor told Jimmy Fallon he had swiped the ball from the famous table football game he and Chandler had in their flat.
The talk show presenter asked: “Did you ever take anything from the show as a souvenir?”
LeBlanc joked: “It’s funny, I took a f**k tonne of cash!”
He later added: “You know in Joey and Chandler’s apartment we had the foosball table? I have the actual ball from the table, the foosball.
“I have it in my toolbox somewhere. Why it’s in my toolbox I don’t know, but I ended up with the foosball.”
