After 10 weeks, we finally have a winner for the Great Australian Bake Off.
Sydney scientist Sunny, 26, was crowned Australia’s best amateur baker on the Foxtel show tonight, beating out David and Dan and impressing in the final showstopper challenge with her stairway geometric cake.
Following the signature and technical challenges, where all three contestants were neck-and-neck going into the last round, the finalists were tasked with making a “showstopping geometric cake”.
The big catch: It needed to feature a pattern that created some sort of illusion and had to be at least three tiers.
Bakers had four-and-a-half hours to bring it home, and Sonny’s eye-popping work of art was an obvious standout from the get-go, with the episode now available to stream on Foxtel Now.
Her offset cube design was made from layers of vanilla and cacao nib sponge, with caramelised white chocolate ganache and raspberry jam, and was frosted in Swiss meringue butter cream.
But it was her geometric element that stunned the judges, with a staircase made of marshmallow fondant providing the wow factor.

But it wasn’t entirely perfect. The judges weren’t happy with the addition of the cacao nibs, saying they “didn’t need to be there”.
“The cacao nibs are almost a bit of a distraction,” Maggie Beer said upon tasting.
“The cake is great, but when you have it with that raspberry, the cacao nibs didn’t need to be there,” Matt Moran added, saying, “but what really makes it is that raspberry and white chocolate, those two flavours together are so beautiful.”
Later in private he also said to Maggie, “It really didn’t need those cacao nibs, it would’ve been a much, much better cake if they weren’t in there.”
Dan’s cake, a white chocolate and apple geometric cake, was a little too rich, however the judges still enjoyed it, while David looked like he could have toppled Sunny with his white chocolate, raspberry and salted caramel geometric cake but was let down by his presentation.
“It’s just so beautiful and lush, it’s one of your best,” Matt said.
“You’ve got layer, balance, texture, but most of all you’ve got your flavour. Well done David,” Maggie added.
