Kensington Palace has released a portrait taken by the Duchess of Cambridge of her husband, Prince William, and their three children.
Key points:
- Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge has become known for taking official portraits
- She is patron of Britain's Royal Photographic Society and earned a degree in art history
- The image has coincided with other Christmas-themed releases from the Royals
The black and white photograph was posted by the palace on Christmas Day, which shows Prince William — also known as the Duke of Cambridge — giving his youngest child, Prince Louis, a kiss on the cheek.
Prince George, who is third-in-line to the British throne, is seen sitting next to his younger sister, Princess Charlotte, who is fourth-in-line.
A tweet from the Royal household confirmed it was taken by the Duchess in Norfolk — an English county north-east of London — and carried a Christmas greeting to followers.
The Duchess has become known for publicly releasing her original photography, which has featured portraits of her family and documentation of Royal trips abroad.
She began the tradition in 2015, when her portraits of Princess Charlotte were released instead of an external photographer's.
This contrasts with long-standing tradition, as famous photographers and artists including Annie Leibovitz and Mario Testino have been invited to create Royal portraits.
In 2017, the Duchess was granted honorary membership of Britain's Royal Photographic Society (RPS) in recognition of her talent.
At the time, the RPS chief executive told the BBC her membership recognised her "long-standing" interest in the field and its history.
As an undergraduate, the Duchess majored in art history and has since been invited to use her academic background in her Royal duties. In 2018, the Duchess curated a Victorian photography exhibition at Britain's National Portrait Gallery.
In June this year, the Queen handed over her Royal patronage of the RPS to the Duchess — ending her 67-year patronage of the centuries-old organisation.
But the Duchess's Christmas image wasn't the only portrait to come from the House of Windsor this week, as an image of the Queen, Princes Charles, William and George making Christmas pudding was released by Buckingham Palace, while the Queen's Commonwealth Trust shared a Christmas card featuring a portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex with their son, Archie.
