Tom Hanks' Oscar highlights

Tom Hanks is a veteran of Hollywood's awards season, winning consecutive best actor Oscars in 1994 and 1995 for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump.

But before Hanks finds out his fate, his wife, Rita Wilson, has posted this flashback to the Oscar moments they've shared over the years.

Freakiest foot forward

Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora is the kookiest early look of the eve: part samurai snowflake, part massive mistake. There's a LOT going on here. Is it cultural appropriation, or just ugly?

It's been said that the first to arrive on the red carpet is the least likely to have a reason to be there ... but Aurora will performing Into The Unknown from Frozen II with Idina Menzel at some point later on. The film was largely snubbed by the Academy, and it's not picking up any extra points with this look.

Who will win?

From the moment Joker debuted at the Venice Film Festival in September, the race for the Oscars was on, according to SMH and Age film writer Stephanie Bunbury.

Martin Scorsese's The Irishman looked briefly like a front-runner until December, when Sam Mendes' 1917 came out.

Bunbury predicts the World War I drama, which appears to be entirely composed of a single shot following one actor, will triumph today. The only challenge, she says, comes from Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, which could conceivably break the chains of best foreign film category and scoop Mendes at the last post.

For the lead acting awards, Bunbury her money on Joaquin Phoenix for Joker and Renee Zellweger for Judy. Unfortunately for Australians, she is also tipping Laura Dern (Marriage Story) to beat Margot Robbie for best supporting actress. You can check out all of our Oscar predictions here.

Early doors

The Oscars define the rule of being fashionably late, with the biggest stars of the night usually rolling in just moments before the ceremony begins. The lads from much-feted flick 1917, George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, are ready for a big night, one of the first on deck wearing classic tuxes. Points to Chapman for the remembrance poppy.
