Signing off
By Michael Harry
Celebrated costume designer Sandy Powell, who is nominated for The Irishman this year, is using fashion for a good cause - a big trend this year.
Her recycled suit was worn to the recent BAFTAs and is signed by every A-lister of the moment, to be auctioned off for the charity Art Fund. Ka-ching!

Royal fail
By Michael Harry
We love last year's best actress winner Olivia Coleman sick, but this dowdy velvet frock looks like a cast-off from the wardrobe department of The Crown.
We've heard it's freezing in Hollywood - 12 degrees and raining - so maybe she's rugging up. Ever practical.
On the Monae
By Michael Harry
Chanelling Grace Jones with a space-age hood, singer-actress Janelle Monae is intergalactic heaven in this glittering high-art gown. It's an early front-runner for best dressed.

Billie's holiday
After scooping the recent Grammy Awards, singer-songwriter Billie Eilish is letting her multicoloured hair down and fronting up to the Oscars. She's tipped to be singing her title track to the new Bond film No Time to Die.
Eilish has departed from her usual head-to-toe Gucci branding with this outre Chanel creation. In a conservative field, it's a brazen blast of rock 'n' roll.
Laura lights up the carpet

Hollywood royalty Laura Dern is a dead cert to win best supporting actress tonight for Marriage Story, but this frock is worth divorcing.
It looks like grandma's burlesque lampshade sewn on top of an otherwise reasonable pale pink gown.

Spike's Kobe Bryant tribute
By Michael Harry
Director Spike Lee, who won his first ever statue for best adapted screenplay last year for BlacKkKlansman, remembers late Lakers star Kobe Bryant in a purple-and-gold tuxedo customised with the number "24".
Lee directed the documentary Kobe: Doin' Work in 2009.
Pink fits
The pink parade has begun, with Regina King, Idina Menzel and Julia Butters, the breakout child star from Once Upon A Time ... in Hollywood all going for various shades of age-appropriate pink.

Tom Hanks' Oscar highlights
Tom Hanks is a veteran of Hollywood's awards season, winning consecutive best actor Oscars in 1994 and 1995 for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump.
He could add a third to the trophy cabinet today, having been nominated for best supporting actor for his performance as television icon Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood. That award is widely tipped to go to Brad Pitt for Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood.
But before Hanks finds out his fate, his wife, Rita Wilson, has posted this flashback to the Oscar moments they've shared over the years.
Freakiest foot forward

Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora is the kookiest early look of the eve: part samurai snowflake, part massive mistake. There's a LOT going on here. Is it cultural appropriation, or just ugly?
It's been said that the first to arrive on the red carpet is the least likely to have a reason to be there ... but Aurora will performing Into The Unknown from Frozen II with Idina Menzel at some point later on. The film was largely snubbed by the Academy, and it's not picking up any extra points with this look.

Who will win?
From the moment Joker debuted at the Venice Film Festival in September, the race for the Oscars was on, according to SMH and Age film writer Stephanie Bunbury.
Martin Scorsese's The Irishman looked briefly like a front-runner until December, when Sam Mendes' 1917 came out.
Bunbury predicts the World War I drama, which appears to be entirely composed of a single shot following one actor, will triumph today. The only challenge, she says, comes from Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, which could conceivably break the chains of best foreign film category and scoop Mendes at the last post.
For the lead acting awards, Bunbury her money on Joaquin Phoenix for Joker and Renee Zellweger for Judy. Unfortunately for Australians, she is also tipping Laura Dern (Marriage Story) to beat Margot Robbie for best supporting actress. You can check out all of our Oscar predictions here.
