Prince Harry revealed he has been in therapy for the last three years over the death of his mother, Princess Diana, after being introduced by Gayle King at a Miami conference, according to the New York Post.
A source at the JPMorgan-sponsored Alternative Investment Summit — attended by a host of billionaires — said Harry emotionally opened up to the wealthy crowd about the childhood trauma of losing his beloved mother in 1997.
The source said Ms King — who has forged a close relationship with the royal couple — introduced Meghan Markle, who then said a few words about her love for her husband, before introducing Harry.
The source said, “Harry spoke about mental health and how he has been in therapy for the past few years to try to overcome the trauma of losing his mother.
“He talked about how the events of his childhood affected him and that he has been talking to a mental health professional.
“Harry also touched on Megxit, saying while it has been very difficult on him and Meghan, he does not regret their decision to step down as senior royals because he wants to protect his family. He does not want Meghan and their son Archie to go through what he did as a child.”
The source said that Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, were likely paid for their appearance, but the sum is unknown. The couple is believed to have stayed at Meghan’s close friend, tennis legend Serena Williams’ private mansion in nearby Palm Beach.
In 2017, Harry disclosed that he sought counselling after enduring two years of “total chaos” while still struggling in his late twenties to come to terms with the death of his mother.
The Prince said in an interview with The Telegraph that he “shut down all his emotions” for almost two decades after losing his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, despite his brother, Prince William, trying to persuade him to seek help.
Disclosing that he has spoken to a professional about his mental health, he described how he only began to address his grief when he was 28 after feeling “on the verge of punching someone” and facing anxiety during royal engagements.
Meanwhile King is in pole position to win the first interview with Meghan and Harry after Megxit.
The New York Post has been exclusively told there is no truth “whatsoever” to reports that Ellen DeGeneres will interview the pair.
King is a firm friend of theirs, attending Meghan’s lavish New York baby shower and visiting the couple and newborn Archie at Frogmore Cottage on the Queen’s Windsor Castle estate.
It means she missed out on her CBS This Morning appearance on Friday morning amid fallout from a clip from her interview with Kobe Bryant’s close friend Lisa Leslie.
The Sussexes’ presence at the Miami summit was noticed by guests at the 1 Hotel in South Beach, including Ramsey Simon, who was dining at Habitat, the hotel’s eatery.
He tweeted: “Seems there’s a famous someone here tonight. A couple who are (presumably) former members, recently detached, of a UK family whose role should be abolished and is a few hundred years past (sic) its excuse for even being.”
The exclusive JPMorgan event was the royal couple’s first public appearance since leaving the royal family.
The New York Post reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex turned up at the swanky 1 Hotel in Miami’s South Beach on Thursday night.
A source revealed: “It was all very hush-hush, with a lot of security. Meghan and Harry headlined the event as the keynote speakers.”
Miami Beach is a far cry from the cold environs of the Sussexes’ $US14 million Canadian bolthole, where People magazine this week reported they have been lying low with baby Archie, practising yoga and walking their dogs.
It’s as yet unknown how much they were paid for the event, though the pair have said they plan to make themselves financially independent, so they will be paid for gigs like this.
They are searching for a new CEO of their Sussex Royal charitable foundation, and hunting for a place to spend the summer in LA, close to Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland.
Energy entrepreneur Michael Hess, the husband of Meghan’s best friend, Misha Nonoo, has already offered them a place to stay in the gated Malibu Colony, dubbed “Billionaire’s Beach.”
A spokeswoman for the Sussexes declined to comment, saying: “We do not comment on their private schedule.”
