Another couple bites the dust as MAFS teases tense final reunion

It's taken this long for Troy, who weeks ago even trimmed his side-part for Ash, to finally catch on to her disinterest.

"I thought I was bringing a lot to the table at the start. I still do think that I'm also a complete package for most girls but Ashley doesn't appreciate it," he says.

During Monday night's Vow Renewal ceremony, he rips off the Band-Aid.

"I said I loved you on several occasions because I thought I did. But now I realise it was me wanting to believe we had something more than we did... You are not the woman I've been searching for," he tells Ash.

Ash returns the note with her own send-off.

"I have had my struggles throughout the experiment... I don't always love the person I am when I'm around you," she says. "It’s really sad."

Sad? That's debatable. More like par for the course.

Since its debut in 2015, MAFS has successfully matched just 12 out of 35 couples, and half of those happened in its tame early seasons, before the dinner parties and boys' nights were a fun staple.

The question as this season wraps up is, does it even matter? Somehow I can't imagine viewers fistpumping over Melissa and John's warm embrace on Monday night as much as they did Tracey's brutal missive on Sunday.

Success story: John and Melissa are all smiles.

The show has its detractors for failing its contestants, those gooey-eyed exhibitionists who apply expecting romance and a breed of babies by season's end.

But this season's best moments have been its grittiest: Dean and Davina's deluded pub tryst; Charlene's shutdown of Dean and Justin’s wife-swapping, "bro-code" entitlement; Tracey finally dumping Dean with an Oprah-inspired "You don’t deserve me!"

It seems Nine understands, too.

In times passed, Sarah and Telv's heartwarming vows would've closed out the season, a cuddly finish to make you forget the previous weeks' tawdry drama. This time, the show's appended a double reunion episode to give Tracey and Davina another chance to blow up the ratings.

As a trash TV viewer, I appreciate the gesture. Happy endings are overrated.
