'We are sorry': Stefanovic brothers apologise following Uber conversation

Karl and Peter Stefanovic have offered their "sincerest apologies" after a late-night call between the brothers was allegedly recorded.

Weekend TODAY presenter Peter Stefanovic was in an Uber when the pair had a conversation on speaker phone where they complained about their Channel Nine colleagues, including TODAY co-host Georgie Gardner.

"Peter and I were guilty of having a spray after a Sunday barbecue. We talk one hundred times a day and hardly ever about work. Mainly about terrible golf," TODAY Show co-host Karl Stefanovic said.

"But we did and the conversation was recorded.

"And we are sorry."

Controversy surrounding the alleged recorded conversation emerged after details were raised on the Kyle and Jackie Show last Monday.

There have since been reports New Idea magazine would publish more details on Monday.

Weekend TODAY Presenter Peter Stefanovic admitted the phone call was "a silly thing".

"I feel awful for the embarrassment I've brought to my colleagues, who I deeply respect," he said.

"I have spoken directly to the people involved and have offered my sincerest apologies as I have been raised to do.

"Do something wrong, apologise and try to move on.

"It is embarrassing to not only get myself into this situation but also my big brother, and the network."

"I was angry at myself at first that I could be so stupid," Karl Stefanovic added.

"For the record, Georgie is killing it as well. She is the best thing to happen to the show in years.

"I love working with her. Anyone who says differently, they don't know."

A spokesperson for the Nine Network said the conversation was "clearly school boy behaviour between brothers, but that's no excuse".

"We appreciate their genuine apologies."

The brothers said they will be taking cabs from now on.

"There's nothing quite like having all your insecurities out there for people to see and read," Peter Stefanovic said.

"I am now investing in a hands-free ear piece, and I gave the driver one star – but only because you can't give a zero."
