Opera singer pleads guilty to historic child sex offences

A former longstanding member of the nation's principal opera company, Opera Australia, has pleaded guilty to historic child sex offences involving a 14-year-old girl.

David Edward Lewis, 58, was charged with four counts of aggravated indecent assault of a victim under the age of 16, two counts of sexual intercourse with a person 14 or over and under 16, and one count of committing an act of indecency with or towards a person under 16.

He pleaded guilty on Thursday to all but one of the charges. One charge of aggravated indecent assault was withdrawn.

Fairfax Media revealed in November that the offences occurred in the mid-1990s, when the then 14-year-old girl was in the children's chorus of an Opera Australia production and Mr Lewis was a chorister in his mid-30s.

It is understood the victim came forward in 2016 after Mr Lewis appeared in a starring role as Princess Turandot's father, the Emperor, in the opera company's spectacular production of Puccini's Turandot on Sydney Harbour in March of that year.
