"I told Beyonce that I was afraid that the predominantly white audience at Coachella would be confused by all of the black culture and Black college culture because it was something that they might not get. Her brave response to me made me feel a-bit selfish and ashamed.
She said, "I have worked very hard to get to the point where I have a true voice and at this point in my life and my career I have a responsibility to do what's best for the world and not what is most popular."
We've all been there, albeit on a slightly smaller scale. You tell your mother that nobody wears pants anymore; she tells you "Ummm, ok? You sure you won't get cold?"
You tell your mother that of course it's fine that you're off to meet a stranger from the internet. It's called Tinder, Ma! "Ummm, ok? You sure you know what you're doing?"
You tell your mother that you're not having bridesmaids at the wedding. You'd rather spend that money on the honeymoon. "Ummm, Ok? You sure you know what you're doing?"
You tell your mother that you're eschewing family tradition in favour of the name Kombucha for your first-born. "Umm, OK?"
And so it goes. Because our mothers, (bless them and their heroism) grew up in a different time, when, in order to live your best life, you didn't rock the boat. This meant staying low, staying quiet and internalising all the prejudices the world threw at them. This is how you moved through life; as a "good girl" who followed the rules and knew her place.
In 2018, difference, at least among the youth, and feminism, at least among young women, is in. Which means that even if the crowd at Coachella didn't understand each reference, they sure as hell would find out. Sometimes, the internet really is that cool.
But even if it wasn't; even if Beyonce did walk away disappointed that every vanilla "Influencer" in her flower crown was left confused, she couldn't say her mother didn't warn her, or try to protect her from it. Because, even though in their concern-trolling, mums sometimes veer too close to slut-shaming or victim-blaming or blatant judgemental finger wagging, it's only because they had to endure these things first and they don't want it to happen again.
But luckily for everyone, the world is changing. Bring on Beychella Part II.
