Laurel or Yanny? Chrissy Teigen, Mindy Kaling, more debate audio illusion on Twitter

It's like the godforsaken dress but for your ears. Here to sever friendships and family ties is an audio clip sparking debate for listeners about whether they hear "Laurel" or "Yanny."

Find comfort in knowing USA TODAY is on the case about the science of it all. Los Angeles-based audio engineer Kevin Cureghian says speakers can influence what people hear. "Any speaker that can replicate enough 'low end' or 'bass' — you will most likely hear laurel," he said. "But any speaker that doesn't reproduce lots of low end (smaller size speakers in general) you will most probably hear 'Yanny.' "

Still, you might find yourself a diehard for either Team Yanny or Team Laurel.

If you haven't, take a listen for yourself and align yourself with a side. Then see which famous faces are also on your team.

Team Yanny:

Mindy Kaling felt very passionately that the verdict should be yanny. "It’s Yanny," she tweeted before adding "Also it’s yanny not yanni, let’s not be cute about it."

But for Kaling, the debate sadly had dire consequences. Sharing a screenshot of her conversation with her Office beau and bestie B.J. Novak to her Instagram Story, the Ocean's 8 star revealed her pal was Team Laurel. "We've had a long friendship. You mean a lot to me," she wrote him in a text. "But if you don't hear Yanny, it's over."

Singer Bebe Rexha weighed in, casting her vote for "YANNY," using caps we presume to convey her conviction.

Not to scare anyone on Team Laurel, but author Stephen King has declared, "It’s Yanny."

Olympic ice dancer Maia Shibutani felt very strongly that the recording said 'Yanny,' and asked her brother and partner, Alex Shibutani, using a GIF "Where are your ears?"

Team Laurel:

Chrissy Teigen, who has a lot of clout when it comes to Twitter, believed it was "so clearly laurel. I can't even figure out how one would hear yanny," she posted.

This upset Kaling, who, as we previously mentioned was team Yanny.

"I bought your cookbook. I loved it. And now you betray me? #yanny" Kaling replied to Teigen's tweet.

Teigen, because she is perfection, knew exactly what to say back and answered: "They’re saying younger, more beautiful people hear yanny!!!!!"

What say ye, Ellen DeGeneres? "Literally everything at my show just stopped to see if people hear Laurel or Yanny," the comedian shared. "I hear Laurel."

Singer Lily Allen said she is part of the "Laurel Gang."

Kaling's former Mindy Project co-star Bryan Greenberg hears laurel, but he's not sure what that means for him. "Am I going to hell?" he cracked

Team both?

Shameless star Emmy Rossum is torn. "I hear #yanny so clearly... but if I listen closely I can hear a deep quiet ghost saying #laurel," she tweeted. "anyone else hear both?"
