Royal wedding Meghan Markle is lauded by designers Stella McCartney and Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy

GIVENCHY’S head designer Clare Waight Keller has described the “extraordinary” moment Meghan Markle tapped her to design her now-iconic wedding gown.

Waight Keller got the gig in early January, after having a “short meeting” with Meghan about the possibility of designing the royal wedding dress.

“It was an extraordinary moment when she told me,” she told reporters in Windsor overnight. “It was an incredible thing to be part of, such a historic moment and, in fact, to have the opportunity to work with her.”

The process of creating Meghan’s long-sleeved, unembellished gown was “very collaborative,” Waight Keller said, adding that Meghan was familiar with her work, and the process flowed together through many conversations over sketches and mock-ups.

“It was a wonderful way to start the collaboration with her, finding out what she wanted for her day and just to find the absolute perfect style for her,” Waight Keller said. “Part of it was really a conversation in the beginning and then through a series of sketches that I proposed to her. We exchanged conversations about what would be the ultimate lines and proportions and the scale of the dress.”

“But over time we quickly got to a point where she knew exactly what she wanted, having tried some of mock-ups that I had shown her. And then it evolved into the final design.”

It comes as Stella McCartney also shared her excitement over having designed the bride’s halter-neck evening dress.

“I am so proud and honoured to have been chosen by the Duchess of Sussex to make her evening gown and represent British design,” McCartney told Women’s Wear Daily. “It has truly been one of the most humbling moments of my career and I am so proud of all the team on this stunning sunny royal day.”

McCartney also dressed the mother of the bride, Doria Ragland, for the evening event. Ragland wore a scarlet long-sleeved dress in silk cady, nude alter suede sandals and a brass gold box clutch.

McCartney had a big day: She dressed Amal Clooney in bright yellow silk and Oprah Winfrey in a blush dress with lace trim for the service.
