The Queen Made a Dramatic Entrance to Meet Her New Great-Grandson Prince Louis

While some royals are expected at Kensington Palace on Wednesday to celebrate Princess Charlotte’s third birthday, the Queen was so eager to have a private meeting with her sixth great grandchild, Prince Louis, that she helicoptered into Kensington Palace from Windsor Tuesday afternoon.

Her Majesty, who is known to prefer simple gifts over ostentatious presents, took a small bunch of handpicked flowers for the Duchess and had, sources say, been “greatly looking forward” to meeting Prince Louis.

William and Kate were hoping to take their eight-day-old son to Windsor Castle over the weekend so that they could introduce him to Prince Philip but the plans were curtailed. Philip is in Windsor recuperating after a hip operation and is apparently still not up to receiving visitors.

“The idea of toys trains and three children was a bit ambitious. The Queen was very keen to meet her new great grandson and to see George and Charlotte, so when the Cambridges couldn’t make it to Windsor, the Queen went to them,“ reports a royal source.

Sources at Windsor say that Philip is making a slow but steady recovery. He is said to still be on crutches and working hard at his rehabilitation so that he can be at Harry and Meghan’s wedding on May 19. “Philip is taking his daily hip physio sessions very seriously,” adds the source. “He is determined to be with the Queen as they enter St George’s chapel on May 19th . He wants to be walking with a stick and says he doesn’t want the clattering of clutches on the chapel floor to distract people.”

One of the reasons Prince Harry was keen to marry Meghan Markle sooner than later is so that his beloved 96 year old grandfather can be there to watch him tie the knot while still in good health. The Duke is said to be a fan of Markle’s, after the former actress won him over with her impressive intellect and sharp wit over the Christmas table at Sandringham.

Meanwhile back at Kensington Palace Prince William has been nicknamed “Daddy Day Care.” William, who was caught having a quick nap during last week’s Anzac Day service, is taking several weeks’ paternity leave and has been busily managing the fort, doing everything from the school run, to bed and bath time.

“He drives George to Thomas's in Battersea in the mornings then takes Charlotte to nursery,” said a palace insider. “He is being very hands on and relaxed about it all right now. He has seen how relaxed his father in law Mike is and seems to have taken a leaf out of his book.”

It is not known whether William’s father, Prince Charles, has yet been to visit his new grandson.

William and Kate have decided not to hire any extra help and are having to cope with Louis waking up every three hours for feeds during the night. Kate’s mother Carole has been at the Palace daily to help the couple, along with the Cambridges’ trusted nanny Maria Borrallo.

“Carole is making sure Kate is resting and not having too many visitors. Kate made no secret of the fact that she wanted another son and she’s over the moon and so is William. They are loving these slightly crazy newborn days with their happy bundle of joy.”
