Tributes are pouring in following news that Deborah Cameron, a former presenter on ABC 702 Sydney and Fairfax foreign correspondent, has died.
Ms Cameron died suddenly on Saturday after a long illness that followed an earlier battle with breast cancer, Fairfax Media understands.
Ms Cameron's husband Greg Earl told Fairfax Media his wife fought cancer to the very end.
"From backing the Swans to shopping at the fish market, we didn’t know anyone who loved Sydney life like our best friend and mum. She fought cancer to the end to keep living that life.
"Thanks to staff at RPA Hospital, Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and Sydney Local Health District," he added.
Ms Cameron's current employer, KJA executive chair Kathy Jones, informed staff of her passing in an email on Monday morning.
"Deb was an amazingly talented woman," Ms Jones wrote. "When she joined KJA some seven years ago after leaving the ABC as their morning broadcaster, I remember saying that her arrival had instantly doubled the intellectual capital of the organisation. And this remained the case for whilst ever she was with us.
"I know, we will all miss her intelligence, inventiveness and innovative approach to her work, but we will also miss her warm spirit, love of life, and the guidance, wisdom and mentoring she provided to us all."
Fellow media personalities are paying tribute on social media, including the ABC's Leigh Sales and Wendy Harmer, who said Deb was renowned for her warm and generous personality.
Ms Cameron's decades-long journalism career began with Fairfax regional newspaper the Warrnambool Standard in Western Victoria, followed by The Canberra Times and The Sydney Morning Herald.
She became the first woman to hold the job of Tokyo correspondent for Fairfax, and also worked in New York and Jakarta.
She was a regular guest on ABC Radio before taking on the role of presenting Mornings on ABC 702 Sydney in 2008, which she continued for four more years.
After leaving the ABC, she joined the communication and engagement consultancy KJA, where she remained until her final days.
Ms Cameron is survived by two children, along with her husband.
Jenny Noyes is a journalist at the Sydney Morning Herald. She was previously a writer and editor at Daily Life.
