Newspaper roasted over embarrassing Stan Lee mistake

A New Zealand newspaper has been left in an awkward position after totally botching its tribute to Marvel legend Stan Lee, who died this week aged 95.

The Gisborne Herald printed a large photo of Lee on its front page last night, alongside the headline: “‘Characters first, superheroes next’: Spike Lee dies at 95.”

Spike Lee is a 61-year-old American director (BlacKkKlansman, Malcolm X) who is still very much alive.

Of course, Twitter users were very keen to provide their feedback on the obituary fail.

Meanwhile, (accurate) tributes have continued to pour in from all corners of Hollywood for Stan Lee, who died early Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.

The “creative genius” Marvel Comics publisher brought to life iconic characters including Spider-Man, X-Men, Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther and the Fantastic Four.

His cause of death is not yet known, although he had suffered several illnesses over the last year, including a bout of pneumonia.
