Sydney Theatre Company scored big in this year's Helpmann Awards, the peak awards for performing arts in Australia.
The company took home 10 awards — more than any other company — at two ceremonies on Sunday and Monday nights at Sydney's Capitol Theatre. It's the first year that Live Performance Australia has split the proceedings.

Sydney Theatre Company won for three shows: its Global Creatures co-production Muriel's Wedding The Musical (which won the Costume, Choreography, Music Direction, Sound Design and Original Score awards); artistic director Kip Williams' production of Bertolt Brecht's The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Best Male Actor, for Hugo Weaving; Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role, for Anita Hegh); and the Melbourne Theatre Company co-production of British playwright Lucy Kirkwood's intimate drama The Children (which took Best Play; Best Direction of a Play, for Sarah Goodes; Best Female Actor in a Leading Role, for Pamela Rabe).
Muriel's Wedding The Musical returns to Sydney in 2019.
Bangarra Dance Theatre also had a night of success, taking home seven awards — six of these for their 2017 work Bennelong: Best New Australian Work, Best Dance Production, Best Choreography in a Ballet, Dance or Physical Theatre Production (Stephen Page AO), Best Scenic Design (Jacob Nash), Best Lighting Design (Nick Schlieper), and Best Male Dancer in a Ballet, Dance of Physical Theatre Production (Beau Dean Riley Smith).
Bangarra also won Best Regional Touring Production for Our Land People Stories.
Where are the women?
Only one of 12 directors nominated this year for their work was a woman: Sarah Goodes. The Melbourne-based director won Best Direction of a Play for The Children — but was one of a disproportionately small group of women awarded on the night.
Eleven of 43 award categories were won by women, including Best Original Score, for which Kate Miller Heidke and partner Keir Nuttall shared the award for their work on Muriel's Wedding The Musical.
By contrast, 20 awards went to men, or to concerts led by solo male performers (for example, Paul McCartney's One On One World Tour 2017).
Gender-queer New York cabaret artist Taylor Mac (who goes by the pronoun "judy" rather than he/his or she/her) took home two awards, for Best Cabaret Performer and Special Event, both for the Melbourne Festival headliner A 24-Decade History of Popular Music.
Of the gender-non-specific award categories, the only one where women nominees achieved parity or outnumbered men were Costume Design (three of four nominees were women), Music Direction (two of four nominees were women) and Comedy (five of seven acts were women).
The Helpmann Awards are broadcast on ABC TV on Monday July 16 from 9.35pm. You can also catch up on ABC iview.
