Splendour in the Grass: More than 100 on drugs charges despite warnings

POLICE warned they’d be out in force targeting drugs at Byron Bay’s annual Splendour in the Grass festival, but that didn’t stop more than 100 people running the gauntlet and winding up on drugs charges at the weekend.

A man allegedly carrying almost 60 MDMA tablets was one of more than 100 people charged with drug possession in the high-visibility police operation, complete with sniffer dogs, from Thursday to Sunday night.

The festival attracted about 37,000 patrons, with police issuing 115 people court attendance notices for 148 drug offences, including two people charged with supplying a prohibited drug.

The 25-year-old man allegedly found in possession of 57 MDMA tablets and cash was charged with possession, supply and dealing with proceeds of crime.

Another woman’s creative attempt to smuggle 12 MDMA capsules hidden in a jar of chocolate spread came unstuck on Saturday when her car was searched as she tried to enter the festival campground in Byron Bay.

Meanwhile, a 42-year-old man was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and trespass after allegedly threatening a security guard with a plank of wood then kicking him just before 11pm on Saturday.

He will appear in Byron Bay Local Court on 11 September 2018.

Police also issued 38 cannabis cautions and five youth cautions.

Tweed-Byron Police district commander Detective Superintendent Wayne Starling said despite the good behaviour of the majority of festival-goers, there were still people who tried to bring illegal drugs into the event.

“It’s disappointing we continue to detect the possession and supply of prohibited drugs,” Supt Starling said.

“Not only is it a serious criminal offence, it is also harmful to your health and you simply do not know what you are taking.

“The safety of music fans attending the festival is and continues to be our number one priority.”

Investigations are also continuing into the alleged sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman about 11pm Sunday.
