'Wolf Creek' actor John Jarratt charged over alleged 1970s sexual assault

Wolf Creek actor John Jarratt has denied the allegation of a historical sexual assault in Sydney's east in the 1970s. 

NSW Police allege a man, who 9NEWS have confirmed is Jarratt, sexually assaulted an 18-year-old woman at a house in Daintrey Place, Randwick in September 1976.

The woman reported the alleged incident to officers from the Eastern Beaches Police Area Command in December 2017 and investigation then began.

Jarratt, 66, was issued a Future Court Attendance Notice for the alleged offence of rape.

The actor was first accused of the crime following the incident report last year, but has denied any involvement.

9NEWS understands the alleged victim was friends with Jarratt and his then-wife for close to 10 years after the alleged incident, even travelling with the pair and attending film sites with the actor.

Speaking to a reporter today, Jarratt said the allegation was "ridiculous and untrue".

Jarratt's lawyer Chris Murphy said the allegations were "devastating".

"I'm astounded the matter is proceeding," he said.

"He and his lovely wife are most upset about it."

Jarratt’s former representative, Ignite Elite Artists, last year said that he “emphatically and completely denies the allegations of sexual assault.” 

“These allegations are completely unfounded and untrue,” the talent agency said at the time.

The talent agency today confirmed to 9NEWS that Jarratt is no longer represented by them.

Jarratt is expected to appear before Waverley Local Court on Wednesday October 10.
