IT WAS the most highly anticipated episode of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Who Is America?
And even without Sarah Palin’s appearance the finale still delivered a sucker punch thanks to the surprise appearance of OJ Simpson.
In one chilling exchange, the former NFL player high-fives Cohen’s character (Italian photographer Gio Monaldo) after the comedian made a joke about killing his girlfriend.
Simpson was famously acquitted of murdering ex-wife Nicole and Ron Goldman in 1995 but was later found liable for their deaths in a 1997 civil trial.
Cohen’s character had invited Simpson to a Las Vegas hotel room to discuss making a money deal with a fictional sheik for him to reveal how Nicole and Ron had died.
While refusing to accept Cohen’s offer to confess, Simpson laughed as Cohen made continued references to murder, which included asking “what really happened” the night his wife was murdered.
“Well, first of all, she wasn’t my wife. We had been divorced and separated,” Simpson replied, before adding: “Hey, hey, I didn’t get away with nothing.”
But after Cohen’s character hinted he had murdered his first wife, Simpson responded: “You weren’t charged, so good for you.”
While Cohen didn’t succeed in getting a confession, Cohen’s efforts were praised by viewers on Twitter.
Meanwhile despite months of hype and Palin admitting to being duped by the comedian, the former governor of Alaska failed to appear on the final episode.
The decision not to air Palin’s segment disappointed fans, who took to Twitter to vent their frustration over her omission.
Speculation was rife that her scenes could have ended up on the cutting room floor because of the recent death of former presidential running mate John McCain or because it simply wasn’t funny enough.

Despite Palin not appearing on screen, eagle eyed fans noted that Cohen had given Palin a cheeky acknowledgment in the credits for her work in “publicity”.
Palin made international headlines in July when she admitted to being duped by a “perverse” Cohen and encouraged him to air the “heavily edited” footage.
