The Block 2018: Week 3, guest bedroom reveal

THE latest room reveal on The Block sees judges Shaynna Blaze, Neale Whittaker and Darren Palmer take a stroll through the guest bedrooms of the Gatwick — and some teams fare much better than others.

While this week’s winners have created a space akin to a luxury hotel, the bottom-ranked team face a critique that their guest bedroom looks like it belongs in a — shudder — a basic display home.

Here’s how they all fared:

KERRIE AND SPENCE, SA, APARTMENT 1, SCORE: 23

The pair are proud of their guest bedroom with its rich blue hues and impressive corner library. The judges are … less impressed.

Darren calls the library “spectacular,” and the other judges approve of their use of that nook in the room — but Neale says it’s a good thing the library is there, because “the actual bedroom part is feeling a little claustrophobic to me.”

Kerrie and Spence had ignored the judges’ earlier advice about making sure their bed doesn’t dominate the room — their kingsize bed with bulky bedhead barely leaves enough room to anyone to walk around.

Shaynna loves the colour palate though, and Darren compliments the sophisticated styling.

“I certainly don’t dislike this room … I’m just finding it hard to get excited about it,” says Neale.

HANS AND COURTNEY, WA, APARTMENT 2, SCORE: 25.5

Their week was a “catastrophe”, but Courtney and Hans feel like they’ve managed to pull off something special.

Darren instantly adores their thick-pile carpet, while Neale is in love with the colour palate: “Absolutely beautiful and very sophisticated. A nice twist on all the pinks we’ve seen in recent seasons,” he gushes.

There is criticism: their bedside table is weirdly bare (Courtney confesses she’d left props to style it locked in the car) and none of the judges are particularly fond of the pendant lights overlooking the bed.

“It’s well on the way to being a lovely room; it’s just slightly undercooked,” says Neale.

Shaynna’s advice: Be more confident in their abilities. “Have fun with it and run with it.”

HAYDEN AND SARA, NSW, APARTMENT 3, SCORE: 22.5

The beautifully detailed ceiling is the “hero” of the room, says Shaynna: “Their execution is incredible.” And the judges all like the layout; much more spacious than that of downstairs neighbours Kerrie and Spence’s room.

Unfortunately, that’s where the praise ends. The judges say the furniture and styling really lets the couple down. “You know what this feels like? A room in a boutique hotel that is ready to be renovated,” says Neale, calling it “boring, predictable and just a bit dull.”

The room “felt like a basic display home” to Shaynna — “and I’m not talking a high-end display home.” She says the balance between the pendants and side tables is all wrong.

Even the study nook has “nothing that makes an impact” — a review that gets a loud expletive from Sara when she hears it.

Their big, empty walk-in wardrobe illuminates the problem: A lack of storytelling in their styling. An artfully-placed suit jacket or nice pair of shoes would make the wardrobe feel warmer and ready for use, according to the judges.

“What a load of s**t,” fumes Sara.

NORM AND JESS, QLD, APARTMENT 4 (PENTHOUSE), SCORE: 24.5

The couple are really happy with their room — and the judges gush as they enter.

“Lush!” squeals Darren. “Oh my god, this is hot!”

They all love the vibrant colour palate — especially the big green bedhead. “It’s absolutely gorgeous and works really, really well,” says Shaynna.

Shaynna also loves the wall sconces, but is concerned they won’t give enough light for reading – which leads to an awkward hunt to find both light switches and power points. The power points are eventually located — but only after moving the entire bed. “In all seriousness, that pisses me off,” says Darren of their hard to reach location.

BIANCA AND CARLA, VIC, APARTMENT 5 (PENTHOUSE), SCORE: 26

The judges have saved the best until last. “I have one word for this room and that word is ‘Hallelujah’. Someone has finally given us a room that feels modern, luxurious, glamorous and absolutely on brief for the building we’re in,” says Neale upon entry.

According to the judges, the room is simple, right on the money aesthetically, and bang-on-trend for 2018.

Shaynna loves the wall lights and floating, underlit bedside tables.

“If I was checking into a luxury hotel in St Kilda tonight, this is what I would expect to see,” says Neale.

The one downside is the execution of some of the painting, but it’s a minor quibble that can be easily fixed.
