The Block 2018: Week 8, hallway, laundry and powder room reveal

IT WAS an insane week on The Block with just four days to complete three rooms, alongside the pressure of a water leak drama.

But for Sara and Hayden, it was worse. They managed to escape a week of negative comments (for their high scoring master bedroom reveal), but tonight, it was all the way back down to the bottom of the leaderboard, with a score of just 18.

Collectively, the judges found more wrongs than rights in their hallway, laundry and powder reveal.

The NSW couple started the week confident, but it all went downhill when they were ordered to clean up their mess or face being shut down — Sara went ballistic — and unfortunately for them, they didn’t get it all done causing massive ramifications.

HAYDEN AND SARA, NSW, APARTMENT 3, SCORE: 18

Sara wanted the judges to see past their “filthy” unfinished rooms, even interrupting host Scott Cam during the judges feedback session to defend their actions. But he wasn’t having a bar of it, saying they weren’t the only ones who had problems to overcome.

At first, the judges did as Sara hoped — they complimented the couple on the nice soft

glow and drama of the space in their hallway.

“I love the step lights all the way down the hallway; I love the shape they make on the floor it’s very beautiful and I love the light behind the art, it’s dramatic and classy,” Darren Palmer said.

But then they turned on the rest of the lights.

“It’s dirty,” Shaynna Blaze said.

“The floor is filthy, and it really lets it down — there’s no excuse for not cleaning your spaces in time for delivery,” Neale added.

He was confused by their execution saying they get some things so right, and so wrong.

“When I look at the left hand side of the hallway I think it’s lovely, The artworks give off this beautiful rich, warm glow, then I look at the this shelf (pointing to the other side) and it’s a disaster.”

“To me that looks like a garage sale,” Shaynna said, adding its among the worst styling she’s seen on The Block.

They liked the great storage in the laundry but again, it lacked execution. And the power room copped it as well with Neale describing the dirt on the floor and the overall unfinished paintwork in the rooms as a disaster.

“Somebody is doing the design and doing a good job and somebody is doing the planning and execution and failing miserably,” Darren said.

KERRIE AND SPENCE, SA, APARTMENT 1, SCORE: 29 (Winners)

They’ve done it again. Kerrie and Spence have topped the leaderboard for the second week running.

Just one point short of their perfect score of 30 in last week’s kitchen reveal.

Although the Buyers Jury were uninspired with their apartment, likening it to a stale office, Kerrie stepped it up big time adding plenty of quirk including a 2 x 2 metre artwork of a chicken in heels.

“There is nothing I like more than a hallway that looks like a gallery,” Neale said.

All three judges applauded the pair on their choice of artwork. Neale loved the simplicity of the design statement — it was all about the art and the lighting and for him and “that takes amazing confidence,” he said.

The positive feedback continued into the laundry with Darren asking: “Is this what laundries have become that they are this glamorous almost kitchen like finesse … it’s just beautiful.” Shaynna was proud of Kerrie’s styling, saying she had come a long way. The powder room got a big tick as well — the basin, the mirror, the vanity.

‘I don’t think I have yet seen them as good as this,” Neale said.

COURTNEY AND HANS, WA, APARTMENT 2: SCORE 24

Courtney and Hans had the largest hallway on The Block, with Neale describing it as a museum.

They all loved the fun and quirky art pieces, but Darren wasn’t 100 per cent sure about the cabinets, he found it to be at odds with the furniture in the living room

But Neale still loved it.

“I think it’s got a glamorous eccentricity about it that really appears to me. It’s a bit kooky,” he said.

Darren said the artworks could do with being closer together.

For Shaynna the laundry was not on the luxury level of Kerrie and Spence’s — but said it wouldn’t lose them any buyers either.

The powder room got much more praise, with Shaynna describing it as glamorous, particularly the vanity.

Darren said the orientation needed more work and suggested they flip the door around to see the best features of the room as they walk in.

The WA couple came second last, but they were still six points ahead of Hayden and Sara.

NORM AND JESS, QLD, APARTMENT 4 (PENTHOUSE), SCORE: 25

The Queensland couple had a rough week especially when their plasterers pulled out before finishing the job. But they came back, got the job done and Jess also managed to secure some great local artwork.

The first thing that Darren said when walking into their hallway was “this marble is exquisite” loving how the shelf tied in with the kitchen bench.

Darren thought it’s a lesson in styling 101 — “don’t crowd it and let the marble speak for itself.”

They all loved the simple arrangement of the room and Darren was quick to point out (to Neale) the artwork was the same artist who painted the picture in Courtney and Han’s bedroom — remember the one he hated, saying it was the worst piece of art he’d ever seen on the show?

They all agreed the hero was the ceiling with its heights and choice of pendants. They loved the offset skylights and how it sent light down the hall.

They found the laundry beautiful and very compact.

“It’s obvious there was no luxury of space to work with and small space solutions should have been put into play there,” Shaynna said, adding powder room lacked good orientation with the toilet pointing directly at the people in the dining room.

“Execution is terrible, it’s really bad,” Shaynna said.

BIANCA AND CARLA, VIC, APARTMENT 5 (PENTHOUSE), SCORE: 27.5

Host Scott Cam wasn’t going to have a bar of it when Sara tried defending their low score blaming it on all the challenges they faced, because as he pointed out, they weren’t the only ones.

Netballers Bianca and Carla had problem after problem with their rooms from waterproofing issues to tiling drama. They even copped a $1000 fine because their electrician was painting when he shouldn’t have been. But the girls redeemed themselves, proving they’re still the styling queens.

“Oh that’s sexy,” Shaynna said when she walked into their hallway. “And so is that carpet runner,” Neale added.

The judges loved the skylights and how the art lights were in the well. Shaynna also thought their signature cabinet by the front door was really beautiful and consistent with the rest of the apartment.

“It’s nicely styled too. It takes restraint and purpose to have good styling,” Darren said.

Looking at all of the art choices this week Shaynna thought it makes the apartment feel a bit more fun and quirky.

“The lounge and dining areas are very contemporary, very modern, I feel this hallway adds that sense of quirkiness the apartment didn’t have,” she said. “This is a stunning hallway, I love it.”

But she said the only thing that let them down, as always, is the execution of the paint.

Into the laundry, they loved the tiles and timber laminate on the bench.

“It ticks boxes of functionality and amenity but they have done it with finesse,” Neale added.

The powder room was described as “glamorous and luxurious” with Neale’s favourite things being the mirror soaring up to the ceiling, the lighting and cluster of terrazzo pendants hanging down.
