Backlash on timing of royal baby news: 'A bit insensitive if you ask me'

MUCH of the world reacted with excitement yesterday to news the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were expecting their first child — but others were furious and upset.

The royal couple were accused on social media of being insensitive after they shared their happy news on a national day of remembrance of infant loss.

Yesterday was International Pregnancy And Infant Loss Remembrance Day — and that wasn’t lost on some, who asked why the news couldn’t have been released on another day.

“And I thought it was bad enough that they couldn’t wait more than three days to knock Eugenie back into place. #appallingtiming,” wrote one Twitter user.

Another added: “A bit insensitive if you ask me. It’s baby loss and bereavement day.”

Kensington Palace declined to comment.

Another tweet said: “Really thoughtful of Harry and Meghan to announce their pregnancy on baby loss awareness day.”

Ruth Bender Atik, national director of the Miscarriage Association, told The Sun : “I imagine they didn’t know. I think it’s as simple as that.

“For many people who have the deep sadness and grief of losing a baby, there was also that moment of joy when they wanted to announce their pregnancy.

“I can understand how people feel. It can be deeply hurtful but I have to be sure they had no idea of the significance of the day.”

Yesterday was also the end of Baby Loss Awareness Week, held every October 9-15 in the UK to mark the lives of babies lost in pregnancy or soon after birth.

The week is organised by the Miscarriage Association, which works with more than 60 charities to raise awareness among the public, healthcare professionals and parliamentarians of the key issues affecting those who have lost a baby, The Sun reported.

The confirmation Meghan was pregnant ended days of speculation about whether the 37-year-old and Prince Harry, 34, were about to become parents.

Speculation ramped up after Meghan wore a long, loose fitting coat to Princess Eugenie’s wedding last week and she arrived in Sydney yesterday holding large purple folders in front of her stomach.

In a statement Kensington Palace said: “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019.

“Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”

Their baby will be the seventh-in-line to the throne, but won’t take a royal title like prince or princess unless the Queen approves it

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said they were “delighted” for the couple in a joint statement.
