Block terrace Shaynna absolutely hated: 'Boring as bats**t'

BLOCK judging moves outdoors this week as Shaynna Blaze, Neale Whittaker and Darren Palmer cast their eyes over the lush and expansive new terraces of the Gatwick.

For one team, it’s very good news: that ever-elusive perfect score of 30, as all three judges rave about their outdoor space.

But another couple have to brace themselves as Blaze lets rip on a terrace she calls “boring as bats**t.”

The Block 2018 — Dining and living reveal

Here’s how each team fared …

Kerrie and Spence, Apartment 1, score: 25

These two lose points for not having a BBQ on their terrace, an omission that surprises Neale in particular.

For Shaynna, one half of the terrace says “elegant and classy,” while the other says “we’ve run out of money,” but the judges all love the hanging sculpture the couple produced a few weeks back.

Norm and Jess, Apartment 4 (penthouse) score: 30 (winner)

Before judging, Jess reveals she and Norm have a lot riding on their success on the show.

“If we win The Block, or we get $100,000, we can have another baby,” she says.

“It’s not just ‘We want to win The Block’, it’s whether or not we get another little human being in our tribe.”

No pressure, then.

Luckily, their massive terrace gets an instant wow from the judges — Shaynna calls it “expansive.”

“Oh my god, this is SO much,” says Darren.

“EVERYTHING about this says luxury,” says Neale, as Shaynna runs around the terrace like a kid in a candy store, marvelling at what’s on offer: Everywhere you turn out here, there’s another beautiful thing to look at, she says.

It’s Norm and Jess’s FIRST winning room — and they score $10k in the process.

Courtney and Hans, Apartment 2, score: 23.5

Darren Palmer’s a fan, calling it “fresh. Light, bright, tropical and a bit more refined.”

Shaynna, however, thinks it’s “Boring as bats**t.”

“I’m a bit sick of white walls, can I tell you. I feel like I’ve walked into a tired white clinical box,” she sniffs.

Neale’s no fan, either: “This is Courtney and Hans at their worst, with that problem of not being able to understand how to use a space. It’s not an outdoor room: It’s an indoor room.”

Darren love the inclusion of a drop-down cinema screen, which Neale agrees improves the space. For Shaynna, though, “the more I talk about it I’m actually getting annoyed.”

“This is a brilliant apartment, and I’m so sorry to say this, but I don’t think they’ve done it justice,” is her summation.

Hayden and Sara, Apartment 3, score: 28.5

The judges all love the “wow factor” — particularly that luxe wave-shaped teppanyaki bench.

“This is what I call ‘selling the lifestyle.’ It’s the most sophisticated and resolved I’ve seen them be,” says Neale.

“They’ve really demonstrated how you would live in this apartment,” agrees Darren.

But Neale and Shaynna both agree there’s one thing missing: a comfy couch.

Bianca and Carla, Apartment 5 (penthouse), score: 29

It’s a near-perfect score for the girls, with the judges all really excited by their fireplace — which you can see burning from the living room, a smart design touch. Even better: it’s a repurposed chimney stack from the original building. a welcome nod to the Gatwick’s history.

The giant dining table and huge BBQ also get a lot of love. With Melbourne rain pelting down during judging, the trio do question why Bianca and Carla have placed a couch out in the elements and not under cover.

The terraces were the final spaces for each team’s apartment — but they still have two weeks of work to go: there’s a whole other apartment in the building that needs renovating, with ten rooms to be renovated.

Just when they thought the finish line was in sight …
