Red Symons pays tearful tribute to son Samuel after his death to cancer

BROADCASTER Red Symons has paid a teary tribute to his son Samuel weeks after the 27-year-old’s death from cancer.

The prominent cancer patient advocate lost a long battle with a cancerous brain tumour two weeks ago. He was first diagnosed at age four.

“Samuel, I have always loved you, I will always love you, I shall always have you,” a teary Symons told 3AW this morning.

“He was remarkable in his own way in that at four-years-old, you sort of come to terms with the fact that he’s not going to be here.

“Twenty years later, he’s got a master’s degree. He was the most qualified person in the family.”

Symons added he was overwhelmed by the support he’d received from “complete and utter strangers”.

The broadcaster also revealed his conversation about death with Samuel weeks before the young man died.

“I asked him, ‘how do you feel about death?’,” Symons said.

“He said ‘I don’t worry about death because it’s been part of my life’.”

In June, Symons told the Herald Sun Samuel had undergone further cancer treatment.

“The result has been good,” Symons said at the time.

“However the simple truth is, and anyone who has cancer knows this, it never really goes away.”

Samuel’s death came after his father suffered from a life-threatening fall in July last year when he blacked out while walking home and hit his head on the pavement.

The broadcaster recovered but was dumped from ABC Melbourne’s breakfast show later that year.
