Without her Manolo Blahnik heels, a faded scar can be seen on Meghan's left foot.
Kumar Kunasingham, consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon for BMI Shirley Oaks hospital said her scar is “100 percent due to open bunion surgery.”
He said: “While the scar is only 4-5cm, this type of surgery can be very painful and it can take up to three months before patients can wear heels again.”
It is thought Meghan had surgery in 2014 to correct bunions after suffering with them for at least four years.
Dr Kunasingham told Fabulous: “The joint on metatarsal [the bone above the big toe] where bunions tend to occur has many layers.
“During surgery you have to cut through all these layers to the bone, which is then broken, straightened and pinned.
“A bunion is a bit like an onion. It has so many layers and both pre and post-surgery they can make you cry.”
The Duchess of Sussex’s heel collection, is believed to be worth thousands, with stilettos from Aquazzura, Manolo Blahnik and Stuart Weitzmann.

However, the orthopaedic surgeon said bunions are not caused by heels, but they do not help the problem.
He said: “It’s a myth that high heels cause bunions.
“They can be aggravated and made sore by certain choices of footwear but bunions are hereditary.
“It affects 25 percent of the population and is more common in women.”
Other celebrities are known to have suffered with bunions, including Victoria Beckham, Oprah Winfrey and Tilda Swinton.
Dr Kunasingham explained keyhole surgery has a faster recovery time, but is less common in the US and Canada where he imagined Meghan had hers done.
He added: “The wound remains very sore and the joint very stiff. It’s likely she would’ve been off her feet for 6-8 weeks at least.”
It can take up to eight weeks to be able to walk unaided with patients having to bath or shower with plastic bags on their feet for six week afterward.
The surgeon added Meghan would have likely avoided heels for up to three months.
But he notes, the duchess made intelligent choices with her footwear.
“In 2015 you can see her scar is still pink yet she’s deliberately chosen heels that don’t rub on the area.
“There’s also a lot of give and room in her shoes and I imagine it’s all because of her bunion surgery.”
