'Very Trumpian': Pamela Anderson continues war of words with prime minister

Former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson has taken a swipe at Prime Minister Scott Morrison for a sexist remark, calling it “a very Trumpian” thing to do.

Appearing on The Project tonight, Ms Anderson continued her war of words with the leader of the country after she called on him to offer Wikileaks founder Julian Assange safe passage to Australia.

The Prime Minister landed himself in hot water after he made an insensitive joke about Ms Anderson when asked about her demand on a commercial radio station.

“I’ve had plenty of mates have asked me if they can be my special envoy to sort the issue out... um, with Pamela Anderson” he said.

Mr Assange remains holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London where he has been hiding out for the past six years fearing extradition to the United States for his role as the head of the whistleblower organisation which publishes classified documents.

“Defend your friend, get Julian his passport back and take him back to Australia and be proud of him, and throw him a parade when he gets home,” she said during an appearance on 60 Minutes earlier this month.

In the wake of Mr Morrison’s remarks on radio, the American actress, 52, fired back in an open letter on her website, calling the comments “lewd” and “smutty”.

“You trivialised and laughed about the suffering of an Australian and his family. You followed it with smutty, unnecessary comments about a woman voicing her political opinion,” she wrote.

On Sunday night, she accused Mr Morrison of borrowing from the playbook of US President Donald Trump.

“It’s typical of a politician, it’s very Trumpian actually to use a sexist remark to divert from the actual issue,” she said. “So it wasn’t shocking, just disappointing.”

When asked how she felt when she heard the Prime Minister had made the remark she said: “I assumed he was doing it on purpose, so he could shift the attack to the lewd comments instead of focusing on the issue of Julian which is most important.”

The Hollywood star has embraced a role as an activist and is often outspoken on feminist issues, animal rights and environmental issues. In recent years she has struck up a relationship with Mr Assange and advocated for governments to ensure his safety.

The former Playboy centrefold has made a career out of highly sexualised roles, but said it didn’t give people the right to make sexist comments.

“My career was what it was and it also got me into a lot of doors ...I guess in some regard I’ve used my image to have a voice so I can’t really complain too much.

“But at this point I think people know I’m an activist,” she said.

“I think when people think of me now they think of me hopefully more as an activist rather than an actress on Baywatch.”

At the top of the interview she thanked the Australia public for supporting Mr Assange, saying “it’s been really nice to see the positive response for Julian.”

“He needs some good news.”

Earlier this month it was revealed that US prosecutors had obtained a sealed indictment against the Wikileaks founder.

Ms Anderson said she had been cut off from contacting Mr Assange.

“I’m not talking to him, I’m not allowed to talk to him,” she said.

“He’s not allowed to receive visitors, phone calls, internet anything. That’s why the situation is getting really dire and he is in need of Australia.

“The Prime Minister can make it happen.”
