Golden Globes 2019 live: Highlights, winners - NEWS.com.au

Co-host Sandra Oh and her mum stole the show during the opening monologue at today’s Golden Globes.

Oh, who is co-hosting alongside Andy Samberg, is the first person of Asian descent to host the Golden Globes, a fact she poked fun at the start of the show.

Crazy Rich Asians made over $200 million at the box office,” Oh said. “Said Asian mums everywhere (Oh pulled a not-so-impressed expression) … cut to my mum, someone should cut to my mum”. The camera panned to Oh’s cute mum in the crowd whose expression caused everyone to erupt with laughter as she displayed the face of a typical Asian mum who is hard to please.

“I gotta say, she did not seem too impressed,” Samberg said.

The Golden Globes are typically more loose than the Oscars as booze is served during the ceremony. Oh, who once starred in Grey’s Anatomy, joked: “Before we start getting sloppy, I gotta take care of my people so they don’t get the Asian flush.”

The camera cut to a waiter who started handing out tablets from an oversized bottle to the Asian stars in the crowd.

“If we’ve got a bunch of antacid out you might want to send some to the Kominsky Method table,” Samberg said, pointing to the table with Alan Arkin, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones. “Reflux city over there.”

He may or may not have been referencing Douglas and Arkin’s advanced years.

Jokes aside, Oh ended the monologue with an emotional speech about representation.

“I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight to look out onto this audience and witness this moment of change,” she said.

“And I’m not fooling myself. I’m not fooling myself, next year could be different, but right now this moment is real. Trust me, it’s real. Because I see you and I see you, all these faces of changes. And now, so will everyone else.”

Oh is not only hosting but also won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for Killing Eve.

“Mostly there are two people here tonight that I am so grateful that they are here with me,” Oh said as she accepted her award. “I’d like to thank my mother, my father,” she continued, as she bowed at her parents in the crowd and thanked them in Korean.

Other early winners on the night included:

Michael Douglas who won Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series (Musical or Comedy) for The Kominsky Method.

Richard Madden who won Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series (Drama) for Bodyguard.

The Americans which won Best Television Series (Drama).

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse which won Best Motion Picture (Animated).

A Star Is Born stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper kicked off what is tipped to be a huge awards season for them by winning Best Original Song (Motion Picture) for Shallow.

Gaga was in tears as she accepted the award with Mark Ronson who took the opportunity to praise the film’s director and co-star, Bradley Cooper.

“You took a heartfelt honest tune and you gave it emotional resonance that we could’ve only dreamt of,” Ronson said. “Seriously, the way you weaved the lyrics into the film and the narrative of your beautiful heartbreaking film is why we’re standing up here tonight.”

Mahershala Ali won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for his role in Green Book.

Patricia Clarkson won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for Sharp Objects.

As expected, Christian Bale won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for his role as Dick Cheney in Vice. During his speech, Bale joked, “Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration”.

Darren Criss won the Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Alfonso Cuarón won the Globe for Best Director (Motion Picture) for his Netflix movie, Roma.

Comedy legend Carol Burnett was the inaugural recipient of a new award named in her honour, the Carol Burnett Burnett Award for Lifetime Achievement in Television.

Introducing Burnett was Steve Carell who said the actress is one of the nicest people in showbiz, so much so that she “makes Tom Hanks look like an a**hole”.

Another highlight was Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph who, when presenting the Globe for Best Screenplay, recreated Glenn Weiss’s on-stage marriage proposal from last year’s Emmy Awards.

FYI - Amy Poehler said yes.

Jeff Bridges was this year’s recipient of the Cecil B. deMille Award and gave a rambling speech in which he spoke about the children’s game Tag and boat rudders, yes, boat rudders.

It’s fair to say viewers were rather confused.

Last year’s Golden Globes were dominated by the #MeToo movement and the sexual misconduct scandal that engulfed Hollywood at the time. But the producers of this year’s Globes promised the event would be “one big party” and so far they’ve stuck to their word.

The Golden Globes honour the best in film and television and are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which has just 88 members.
