They’re one of Hollywood’s most notoriously affectionate couples, and their love story is well documented. But now we know how Keith Urban finally managed to seal the deal with Nicole Kidman.

In a new interview with PEOPLE, the Aussie actor spoke about the moment she realised the country music crooner was “the one” — less than six months after the pair were introduced.

After meeting at the G’Day USA gala in early 2005, an event honouring Aussies in Los Angeles, the stars grew closer over the following months. Soon after, Urban made a grand, Sex and the City-style gesture to prove his affection.

“It was my [38th] birthday, and he stood outside with gardenias at 5am on my stoop in New York,” Kidman, 51, recalled.

“That is when I went, ‘This is the man I hope I get to marry.’”

She also revealed that the singer, songwriter and music producer also took her on a bike trip from New York City to Woodstock, NY, the very same site as the 1969 music festival.

“It was pretty intense,” Kidman said. “I believed by that point he was the love of my life. Maybe that’s because I am deeply romantic, or I’m an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, ‘Oh, okay, here he is.’”

The Destroyer star already had two children — daughter Isabella, now 26, and son Conner, now 23, whom she’d adopted with ex-husband Tom Cruise — when she met her now-husband.

Kidman split from the Mission Impossible star in 2001 after 11 years of marriage. She tied the knot with Urban in Australia in 2006, just one year after the 5am gardenia gesture. The couple now calls Nashville, Tennessee home, along with their daughters Sunday, 10 and Faith, 8.

“Definitely we both met each other exactly at the right time,” Urban, 51, told PEOPLE back in 2007. “She said early on that she wanted to be brave with me. I feel there was something else at work, bringing us together and then just continuing to watch over us.”
