Triple J breakfast host Liam Stapleton was burnt not once, not twice, but three times this morning by Sunrise star Sam Mac.
Liam is good mates with the Sunrise weather presenter and organised courtside tickets to the Sydney Kings NBL game on the weekend to celebrate Sam’s birthday.
But Liam was less than impressed when he heard Sam talking about the basketball game on Sunrise this morning.
“Did you have a nice birthday?” Sam Armytage asked him.
“I did actually. I went to the basketball on Saturday, my friends organised tickets,” Sam said.
“I was literally courtside, front row. And you know how in NBA they have Jay-Z and Beyoncé — it was myself and my friend who no one’s heard of. We were the NBL equivalent of the celebrity row,” Sam joked.
Liam was told about the TV snub and spoke about it not long afterwards on radio. Reuben Styles, who is one half of music duo Peking Duk, just happened to be listening to Triple J at the time and also just happened to be appearing on Sunrise later this morning alongside Sam Mac.
The musician rang into Triple J Breakfast with Liam Stapleton and Ben Harvey and told the hosts that he would raise the snub on the Channel 7 breakfast show, which is exactly what happened when he was live on TV.
“Happy Birthday, by the way,” Reuben said to Sam. “You were courtside at the basketball weren’t you?”
“I was, yeah,” a somewhat confused Sam replied.
“How’d you get that ticket?” Reuben asked.
“I know some people in TV and they couldn’t get any real celebrities to sit in the front, so I went,” he said before he quickly changed the subject.
Snubbed again.
The Sunrise star had one last chance to give credit to Liam and thank him publicly for the birthday tickets during his final weather cross this morning, but he jokingly stuck the boot in for a third time and only referenced Liam’s co-host.
“Quick thank you to everyone who sent me birthday messages over the weekend,” Sam said. “Thank you to the Sydney Kings for having me on Saturday. I got to sit next to one of the members of The Ben Harvey Breakfast Show on Triple J, which was awesome as well. So thank you, guys.”
Well played, Sam.
