Key points:
- French police have two days to decide whether to let him go or press preliminary charges
- One of Brown's bodyguards is among the others detained, according to a Paris police official
- The woman who filed the complaint said she met Brown and his friends at a club
Family and domestic violence support services:
Brown was detained on Monday on potential charges of aggravated rape and drug infractions and remained in custody on Tuesday, a judicial official said.
Investigators have another two days to decide whether to let him go or file preliminary charges.
Brown's publicists at Sony Music would not immediately comment on the complaint or say what the 29-year-old was doing in Paris.
The singer, who was awarded a Grammy for Best R&B album in 2011 for F.A.M.E., has been in repeated legal trouble since pleading guilty to the felony assault in 2009 of his then-girlfriend, Rihanna.
He was sentenced to community labour, five years' probation, and domestic violence counselling.
There were global ramifications from his 2009 assault, having being denied entry to the UK in 2010, and Australia and Canada in 2015, as a result.
After completing probation in 2015, the singer has had further run-ins with police ranging from a nine-hour standoff with Los Angeles police to allegedly "sucker-punching" a photographer in Florida.
In June 2017, a Los Angeles judge granted Brown's ex-partner and model Karrueche Tan a restraining order after she alleged physical and mental abuse.
One of Brown's bodyguards is among the others detained, according to a Paris police official.
The woman who filed the complaint said she met Brown and his friends at the club Le Crystal in the 17th arrondissement of north-western Paris on Wednesday, and then they all went to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel near the Concorde Plaza in central Paris, according to the official.
Neither official was authorised to be publicly named discussing the investigation.
