Hollywood and British royalty have combined in London, where Prince William and Kate Middleton have turned up the glitz on the red carpet at the BAFTA Awards.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a glamorous entrance as they waved at fans outside the Royal Albert Hall, where the best in film have gathered for the annual awards ceremony, hosted by Joanna Lumley

Kate looked stunning in a romantic cream one-shouldered gown, with a floaty skirt and floral embellishments. She wore her hair back in an elegant updo, and accessorised with a white clutch and silver drop earrings.

Meanwhile, Prince William, who is president of BAFTA, looked every inch the dapper royal in a simple black tuxedo.

Plenty of stars are rubbing shoulders with the royals at the industry event, including Australia’s own Margot Robbie, who is nominated as Best Supporting Actress for her role in Mary Queen of Scots.

And if there’s a theme on this year’s red carpet, it’s “extra”.

For example:

The 28-year-old’s gown featured a very busy mix of tulle and embellished jewels - with sleeves which will almost definitely irritate those on either side of her during the show - and sorry to be crass, but it was a little reminiscent of a toilet brush.

Competing against Robbie for Best Supporting Actress is Amy Adams, who scored a nod for her role as Lynne Cheney in Vice.

The actress, 44, struck a pose on the red carpet in a sleek burgundy gown, accessorised with a giant glittering brooch and statement earrings.

Octavia Spencer attracted plenty of attention in her eye-catching red dress, which featured a sequin-covered top.

Even Best Actress nominee Glenn Close, who stars in critically-acclaimed movie The Wife, couldn’t help jazzing up her simple black outfit with two giant silver attachments.

British actress Cynthia Erivo arguably stole the show in a jaw-droppingly fabulous blush and purple gown, with a frothy skirt that would even make Lady Gaga jealous.

Even Best Director nominee Spike Lee got the memo, rocking up to the show in an eye-catching purple suit — and gold platform shoes.

The sneakers featured messages — the name of his movie, BlackKklansman, and the words “speak on it”.

The ceremony is now underway, where The Favourite leads nominations with 12 nominations.
