Kate Middleton visits Lavender Primary School for Children’s Mental Health week - NEWS.com.au

Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge has met children and parents to discuss the importance of looking after children’s mental health, as she visited a primary school in north London.

The Duchess also met with parents to talk about how to get into good routines around sleeping, exercise, screen-time and healthy eating.

The 37-year-old arrived at Lavender Primary School in Enfield to learn about the work being done in the UK to support children’s mental health and well-being.

She brought with her a photograph of her family —husband Prince William and children George, Charlotte and Louis — as she joined pupils sharing objects that represent “something that makes them feel good”.

She first went to visit the leading children’s charity Place2Be in support of Children’s Mental Health week.

Dressed in a bright green dress from London designer Eponine and wearing fashionable black ankle boots and black tights, Catherine brightened up a grey London day as the children sang songs and waved banners to welcome her.

Catherine, the wife of Prince William and mother of three young children, is the patron of Place2Be and has made young people’s mental health a key part of her philanthropic work.

Place2Be provides in-school support and training to improve the emotional wellbeing of pupils, families, teachers and support staff, and works with almost 300 schools across England, Scotland and Wales.

The theme of this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week is ‘Healthy: Inside and Out’, focusing on the connection between physical and mental health, and Catherine sat in on two lessons at the school and watched the students take part in the Daily Mile challenge, which teaches them the importance of being active by walking or running a mile every day.

She then joined parents for the discussion about the challenges parents face establishing routines for children around how much time they get to sleep, spend on digital devices, eating well and being active.

Catherine was then due to visit Alperton Community School to meet the UK’s first winner of the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize, Andria Zafirakou, and find out more about the programs the school runs to support both students and teachers with their mental wellbeing.

Ms Zafirakou won the international prize in 2018 in recognition of her contribution to the school community.

Catherine was to join a roundtable discussion with teachers about school readiness for students, then joined students in the Random Acts of Kindness Club, which is an extra-curricular club focusing on the wellbeing of the school community.

Catherine’s father-in-law Prince Charles and his wife Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall were also scheduled to visit to the Supreme Court in London overnight to celebrate the court’s 10th anniversary.

The royal pair were to meet the justices and staff, and inspect the court’s art collection, which includes a portrait of the Queen opening the building ten years ago, a bust of King Edward VII and a portrait of Charles I.
