Serena's pre-match routine
By Melissa Singer
Serena Williams, who just presented the Best Picture nomination for A Star is Born, took to Instagram this morning showing her having a hit of tennis, with the caption "Pre-Oscars beauty routine". Nice.
Regina King pays tribute
By Michael Idato
Speaking backstage, actress in a supporting role winner Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) said her win was made particularly poignant by having her mother in the audience.
"It's hard to put it into words, but I feel like it's one of those full circle moments," King said. "So much of the character was inspired by my mother and grandmother."
King also acknowledged groundbreaking winners such as Hattie McDaniel, who won best supporting actress in 1940 for her work on Gone with the Wind. "It means so much for me personally," King said. "The love, the support and the lifting up I have received on my journey as an actor ... it's a reminder of when Hattie McDaniel won, she didn't win because black people voted for her, she won because she gave an amazing performance."
Cuaron’s first win of the awards
By Garry Maddox
The multi-talented Alfonso Cuaron has won his first award of the night. He is also in contention for best picture, best director, best foreign-language film and best original screenplay for Roma.
Roma has the aroma of success
By Karl Quinn
The first win of the night for Roma, for Alfonso Cuaron's cinematography. That augurs well for the rest of the evening, you'd have to think.
Australia misses out on gold
By Karl Quinn
Fiona Crombie's superb production design work on The Favourite is snubbed, sadly, for Black Panther – and this is a pretty strong indication that the superhero movie is shaping up to sweep the technical categories tonight.
Hannah Beachley reads her speech off her phone, with a refrain of "I'm stronger because…" "When you think it’s impossible remember this piece of advice … I did my best, and my best is good enough." Teary, inspirational, but most importantly, finished just before the conductor lifts his baton.
There's one other Australian nominee: screenwriter Tony McNamara, up for his work on The Favourite.

She's gotta have it!
By Karl Quinn
Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry are onstage in the most outrageously over-the-top faux Favourite outfits, to tell us how much the subtle art of costuming brings to a movie. She's stroking a tiny toy rabbit all the while. Very funny.
It doesn's help the film though: the awards for best costume design goes to Black Panther. Ruth Carter has been nominated twice before, the first time in 1993 for Malcolm X, the second for Amistad in 1998. Carter takes the stage, and thanks Spike Lee for giving her her start in the business (she worked on his School Daze in 1988).
She calls Black Panther director Ryan Coogler a genius, and notes that "adding Vibranium to costumes is very expensive." "This is for my 96-year-old Mom watching in Massachusetts," she adds."You are the original superhero."
