Queen have delivered on their promise to rock the Oscars this year. The iconic British band opened the 91st annual Academy Awards today and it was as the extravaganza we were all waiting for.
Guitarist Brian May, 71, and drummer Roger Taylor, 69, were joined on stage by American Idol alum Adam Lambert, who officially stepped in as lead vocalist for the late Freddie Mercury in 2013.
The trio performed a medley of the band's greatest hits 'We Will Rock You', 'The Show Must Go On', and 'We Are the Champions'.
"I lived in Los Angeles for 17 years and to open the Oscars, I never would have dreamed this is possible," Lambert, 37, told E! News on the red carpet ahead of the ceremony. "Queen and I have been working together for six years and been traveling the world and we're performing this song in celebration of Bohemian Rhapsody -- everybody worked hard... and we're celebrating together."
The band has been thrust back in the limelight recently, thanks to the success of Bohemian Rhapsody, which is nominated for five awards this year, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Rami Malek's portrayal of Mercury. Malek has won a Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award for his role in the movie, which May said Mercury would have approved of.
"I think he would have felt it was a fair cop, really. It shows all his greatness and all his fallibility and insecurity -- the whole bit," May told music site Louder Sound in November. "I think it shows him very truthfully and not sycophantically, but in a way that appreciates his talent. Because he was sure was unique. I've never met anybody like Freddie in my life, before or since, and it's probably not going to happen again."
