It’s already a big Oscars for Marvel
By Garry Maddox
Who needs a most popular film Oscar? Marvel has already won best costume design and best production design for Black Panther and best animated feature film for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
A win for multiversity
By Karl Quinn
Maybe this is as radical as we're going to get tonight: Michelle Yeoh and Pharrell Williams introducing the award for best animated feature, and he's wearing shorts and a camouflage suit.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller dedicate their win for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to all those kids out there who look at the movie and see someone in it who looks like them.
If there's a theme in this telecast, it's that the age of tokenism is over. Diversity is the new normal.

Oscars play it safe
By Karl Quinn
So far, so safe. There has been a distinct lack of politicking or statement making up on stage. Whether people are following instructions to make nice so as not to upset middle America, or whether there's a sense that the hard work has been done already – thank you #OscarsSoWhite, hello #TimesUp – we've been subjected to a stream of pretty unremarkable acceptance speeches. A few of the introductions have had their moments of fun and cheek, but still – other than Javier Bardem's speech (delivered in Spanish), it's all been pretty bland. Some will welcome that but I think it's a bit meh.
Ali the champion
By Karl Quinn
There's a lot of love in the room for Richard E Grant and Sam Rockwell as best supporting actor, but it goes to Mahershala Ali for Green Book. It's the second time he's won this award; the first being for Moonlight two years ago.

Is Charlize Theron auditioning for a role as a Bond villain? Standing next to – hell, towering over – Daniel Craig, she looks ready for the part. Quick, sign her up.
Alfonso Cuaron's shot at the history books
By Michael Idato
Technically speaking the record for most Oscar wins on a single night belongs to the legendary studio founder Walt Disney who, in 1953, won best documentary and short, best short subject cartoon and best short subject two-reel.
A list of other people, including Peter Jackson, Billy Wilder, Francis Ford Coppola and James Cameron have won three on a single night.
Alfonso Cuaron has already secured foreign film and cinematography tonight, and if he wins director (which he almost certainly will) and best picture (for which he's in with a chance) he will match Disney's record.

Wall schmall
By Karl Quinn
OK, we are now in line for a huge potential first: Roma has won best foreign language film, and so it could become the first ever to win both that award and the best film award.
How fitting that Javier Bardem introduced the nominees in Spanish, with subtitles. "There are no borders or walls that can restrain genius," he said, as Angela Bassett stood by his side. And seemingly none that can stop the Mexican dominance of Hollywood's biggest love fest continuing for another year.
